Arsenal thread 2012/13

Had a quick look on their match thread yesterday and it shows how far we've come when Arsenal fans are lusting after our second choice keeper.

Well, I haven't heard my fellow gooners lust for him...but he is a very good keeper and if someone says ' sign him up' I can see why. I don't think being second choice has any significance. Being second choice behind Hart, who many agree is the best keeper in the premier league is not that bad for a budding keeper. Most of us want someone who can come in and challenge Schez anyway, get in some healthy competition, so it's probably from that point of view when you hear gunners say they want Panti.

Good post. We are very lucky to have Panti as a second choice. It's a difficult position to fill as there is generally a shortage of decent keepers, so anyone who is any good can more or less be guaranteed to get a starting gig somewhere if they want it.

Makes you wonder slightly what Pantilimon's career plans are - he's a young lad but you'd think he would want to get a starting role somewhere, especially as Hart is good, young and durable.

I would think that Pantilemon considers himself very lucky to have been given a chance at City. It's tough to make a break out from Romania I would think. Had we not played them in the Uefa we may not have spotted him. If he was injured on that day he'd still be there.

I would imagine he'd be happy to be 2nd choice for at least another 2 seasons but after that he'd want to be going. Hopefully in those 2 years he'll get games and do himself proud.

It's weird but he's one of my favourites in the squad. Maybe it's because I'm tall and awkward looking too :-)

It says a great deal about human nature that people only ever realise how unfair something is when it affects them.

Arsenals fans recent conversion to the belief that finances in modern football are unfair is less than touching, especially as it was them, as much as any other club, that created the monster that they now rail against so passionately.

Their complete lack of self-awareness is comical.

I have been thinking about this recently and I have come to accept that we shouldn't care what you guys or any other club spends. No disrespect to any team, but there are a load of teams in the premier league that can't spend as much as we do. If we at arsenal complain, then what should we expect of the other teams? If we can't compete with you then they might as well just leave the league, because they can't compete with us (spending wise) let alone you. I'm sure before the Sheikh we used to sign players more expensive than you guys. We also probably had a higher wage bill, which you have recently overtaken. But we are still up there with you guys, united and chelsea when it comes to wage bill. Swansea last season beat you guys, beat us and several other top teams. They didn't care about what our players or your players were paid. They didn't care how much was spent in transfers. They just came to play.
But also to be fair to the disgruntled arsenal fans, maybe we wouldn't care how much you spend if you didn't come knocking at our door to take our top players every time. It does reach a point where it feels like you are taking advantage of the fact that we can't match what you are offering our top players. There are some of my mates who actually believe that Mancini is employing Machiavellian principles aimed at weakening us so that we don't disturb the duel he is preparing with Ferguson. Why not raid United or Chelsea or liverpool they wonder. Why constantly raid us? We are not the only club with some stand out players. Why not go for Cisse? or Demba Ba? The conspiracy theory is a bit extreme, but it is as a result of frustration. I'm sure if we constantly raided, say, Newcastle for their top players every season, they would definitely hate us. I think other than the Ashley Cole saga, many arsenal fans have never bothered with what Chelsea do in their transfer activity. Because they don't bother us and unsettle our players. They even gave us Benayoun on loan. We really have no issues with them and their spending. I'm sure for you it's just business, but you can't tell me you have no inkling of an idea why arsenal fans would start having negative feelings about you. I can say that many arsenal fans also have a problem with Barcelona. And it's not about the money they spend. They don't even match you guys. They irritate arsenal fans because they seem constantly linked to our top players. From Overmars, Van bronkhost, Emmanuel Petit, Silvinho ( I think he did play for you later as well), Henry, Hleb to Fabregas (whom they felt entitled to). And now they want Song.

So you really can't look at the spending issue in isolation. But speaking for myself, I don't care what you spend. But it doesn't mean I won't be irritated if you want to take our top players every time. Fair enough?

Now look here. You can't keep up this ''reasonable gooner'' nonsense. It's not fair on us blues who, let's just say, don't love you lot!

Good post, and well made points. However, at least some of the bitterness from Arsenal fans goes back to before RvP/Nasri, and maybe way back to before even Ade. Ade, by the way, was a player Arsenal fans wanted rid of. Arsenal didn't put up too much of a fight for Kolo. Really it comes down to Nasri, and the bitterness was extreme by then already.

Basically agree with what you say, some Arsenal fans may feel 'got at' and be reacting. Some, like yourself, are reasonable and have a point. But others are just being ...... well, insert your expletive here!

But now maybe some City fans feel themselves 'victims' of Arsenal fans misplaced anger? Still, it keeps us all going till the season starts!

P.S. There have been a couple of good Arsenal fans on here but they haven't stayed around or posted much. Hope you like it and stick around, threads like this are so much better with otheres clubs' fans imput.

I think the simple answer is that players from Arsenal already play in a style of football that is very similar to they style of football Mancini coaches. They are comfortable on the ball, can pass and receive well and are open to improvement.

I don't say that as a dig at Wenger but he doesn't seem to be able to get the best out of players.

If you take a look at the 3 clubs you mentioned I'm hard pressed to think of any players currently playing for them who'd interest City( apart from Agger of course).

If you look at the 3 players we have bought from Arsenal, One (Toure) was surplus to requirements and we paid a premium for him. Clichy was not quite surplus to requirements but his form had dipped and Wenger didn't seem bothered about letting him go.

The only player we have bought who could be described as a top player was Nasri but even he was disillusioned with the club and its perceived lack of ambition.

I can see why Arsenal fans are disgruntled by City buying these players but surely they should be addressing the reasons as to why they were available in the first place and not having a pop at the Club that bought them.

It's not that City want to ruin you (even though you used to smash us 5-0 everytime we met), Mancini and Hughes were just looking at the best players for their team, it just so happened 4 of them played for Arsenal. You should of spent in 2010 when you had RVP, Fabrigas, Nasri, Clichy, Vermaelen and Wilshere was coming on the scene, Gervinho wasn't the anwer. If you had a world class CB and winger in that team, you would still be league challengers and maybe even Champions League challengers. Honestly used to like Arsenal and i used to like watching Bergkamp and Henry in their day, but you need to spend on the right players.
