Regarding "denying a clear goal scoring opportunity" resulting in a red card.
Shurely conceding a penalty is considered "creating a clear goal scoring opportunity". :)

Yes that's just readdressing the opportunity the cheating defender stopped. The red card is the punishment. If you took away the red card then defenders would dive in every time to take out the last man. Last night for example Robben was almost certain to score, but they missed the penalty. The only other option that would work is a 'penalty goal' like in rugby, but I am not in favour of that being introduced.

What about when they get penalty right in the corner of the area on the byeline as they kick the ball out of play and initiate contact then, when they would have had more chance of platting fog than scoring?

Still don't get why boatang wasn't sent off for bringing Ozil down , Its never nice when the law only applies to one team.

Anyway, good win yesterday, a potential banana skin negotiated easily. Cracking month coming up, big games every week.

Awarding a penalty is punishment enough for me along with a yellow card unless the tackle is violent or dangerous.

Games need to be played 11 v 11 and a red card needs to be warranted.

I've always wondered if a rugby style "sin bin" would work in football. Reds seem to kill games, a punishment that only really seems fitting for dangerous play. Then again if reds didn't exist you'd have keepers wiping out players and other abuses.

Wouldn't the gloryhunters hold off on the statue unless he had won a European Cup, or am I missing something here? There seems to be a little irony in there between the two parts of your post.
