That Sanchez guy ain't bad. Liverpool would be a different prospect if they'd landed him. Geography has a lot to do with where players go now, as it's a lot better being a millionaire in London than in Liverpool (and Manchester for that matter).
It depends on the player. Not everyone has the same preferences or priorities. I think as a club we've been quite canny at picking players (Silva, Kompany - and to a lesser extent, Ageuro) who aren't bothered about going to West End nightclub openings. Some prefer the more sedate, less intense life with much less limelight involved that Manchester provides.

Something I don't get with this is that London is less than an hour away from Manchester on a plane so a footballer could still sign for a club in the north west and spend a fair bit of time enjoying what London has to offer as and when their schedule allowed.

Or two hours on a train. On a bad day it would take you more than that to drive to central London from Surrey.

To some professions eg finance & law, London represents the undisputed pinnacle, professionally. In very broad terms the best in those professions tend to operate from the capital. In the last eight years the Premier League has gone to London once and to Greater Manchester seven times. Those respecting their career ambitions will give considerable weight to that fact when deciding where to ply their trade.

Maybe having a squad of players attracted to London at the expense of their pure footballing ambitions in why Arsenal seem to lack so much stomach for the battle, especially against other leading clubs. Their squad is largely comprised of preening dilettantes, or fanny merchants as my dad calls them.

It's an excuse. A combination of better salesmanship and slightly upping our offer (which was already more than Arsenal's supposedly) could've brought him to Liverpool. Arsenal are not THAT big a draw. London probably gives a club a better starting position but you still have to court the player. It's not like we were competing with say Juventus (champions, Italy vs. england) or United of a few years ago ("mystique", Ferguson).

It's like when you want to go out with your boy, but rather than say he just feels like staying on the couch and watching Netflix, he says "my wife won't let me". I'd like to think that most times when men say this they are taking the piss, it's pathetic to imagine that many men are actually in such emasculating relationships where they need permission for their social activities.

Suck it up: Szczesny came in for criticism for his error-strewn showing at St Mary's

Wojciech Szczesny has been fined £20,000 for smoking in the showers after a game.

He was caught lighting up following Arsenal’s New Year’s Day defeat at Southampton – to the fury of boss Arsene Wenger, who was already raging over the keeper’s error-strewn horror show.

Szczesny was dropped for the next game, the FA Cup tie with Hull, although Wenger was always intending to give David Ospina a run in the competition.

But it remains to be seen whether Wenger will further punish Szczesny by dropping him from the team for Sunday’s clash with Stoke City.

Headache: Wenger's men were soundly trounced at St Mary's

Mirror Sport contacted Arsenal for comment on Monday but they failed to respond.

Arsenal have denied other claims - aired by former midfielder John Jensen on Danish TV - that Szczesny has been punished after a dressing room row and won’t play for the club again.

It was a miserable day for Szczesny as he made two mistakes which led to both Southampton’s goals. After the game, Wenger refused to discuss Szczesny’s performance.

Wenger has been outspoken in the past after Jack Wilshere and former captain William Gallas were caught smoking while on nights out. They were both reminded of their responsibilities.

But Szczesny smoking after a game was seen as a more serious offence.
