The difference is when Allison was fouled your player was competing for the ball and made a movement toward Allison.

Ben White for instance, would know where the ball is going to be played, and he will literally plant himself in an area that blocks the keeper's pathway to the ball. In a literal sense, all he is doing it standing rooted to a spot. White literally just stands rooted to the spot like a pot plant. There is no 'literal' foul.

Another thing, is we also have to defender corners, and Raya doesn't seem to get locked in like other keepers. Infact Raya often comes to claim the ball.

My honest assessment. Were a big team, we have an absolute number of units in the team at any given time. The average height and weight of the Arsenal team on majority of occasions would be taller/heavier than our opponents. Were not fouling teams, were just out muscling and out jumping them. Everyone got so used to the idea Arsenal are a soft touch, a cliche from the days of Wenger when we used to stack nimble nifty attacking midfielders like Nasri, Cesc, Cazorla, Arshavin, Rosicky, Hleb ect. Teams had a lot of fun bullying Arsenal. Bolton, Blackburn and Stoke especially. Now though, its Arsenal that are doing the bullying and our rivals dont like it.
To simplify it - a lot of modern day footballers are fannies and don't like heading the ball, particularly in a crowded area. So if you get players in who like heading the ball and you put the ball in good areas, you'll score more goals. Simples.

Most corners for all teams these days should result in an indirect free kick to the defending team because in nearly all of them defenders are obstructed.

In all of Arsenal’s goals from corners, basketball set-moves called a ‘screen-and-roll’ occur, which are legal in basketball but are obstruction in football. The initial marker of the player who ends up heading the ball is always obstructed by one or two attacking players who screen him from following the man who heads it.

Sure but if you enforce that then you need to enforce defenders not grabbing/blocking too. The net result would still be the same.

Teams are trying to call out Arsenal on this because they're a threat, not because of any infraction of rules as you can be sure that VAR will be looking at every Arsenal corner goal for a foul. Fact is, some teams got caught with their pants down by Arsenal's set pieces (including the Rags who hilariously spent 20 mins before kick off on weds practicing defending corners and then conceded both goals to corners in the match!).

The other teams will come up with ways to counter the set pieces by getting keepers to smash through, or having braver players and better marking (for Arsenal's 1st goal on weds 3 Rags we're marking each other before Timber scored).

BTW Arsenal's set piece goals only account for 22% of their goals scored unlike Stoke where it was something like 46%. And the 2nd most effective team in the PL at scoring from corners? Manchester City who've scored just 5 less than Arsenal since the start of 2024

I’ve often seen keepers fall down pretending to be injured if they fail to get or punch the ball on corners often getting a free kick out of it.
I think this will start to happen as a response to this tactic.

Yes. Kind of my point. Your player isn't competing for the ball, just preventing the goalkeeper from doing so. Textbook obstruction. In our case, it's a player honestly competing for the ball and the question becomes whether the contact was sufficient to call a foul. That's always going to be subjective, of course.

Ben White for instance, would know where the ball is going to be played, and he will literally plant himself in an area that blocks the keeper's pathway to the ball. Sometimes he does. Other times he clearly backs into the keeper. Always backs in, never front on, presumably to create some plausible deniability.

Here's Martinelli. Runs to Ederson alongside his friend, checks the flight of the ball, backs into him and puts his arms across Ederson when he tried to move around him.

How can you possibly say that's not blatant obstruction? He's not just standing in a particular place, he's moving into the path he knows the keeper wants to take to block him off. Do that to any attacking player anywhere else on the pitch and it's a foul.

Another thing, is we also have to defender corners, and Raya doesn't seem to get locked in like other keepers. Infact Raya often comes to claim the ball.
Again, kinda proving my point that other teams simply don't do it. I've been keeping an eye out for it since the Ederson incident, because we heard a lot of the 'everyone does the same' excuse back then. And I've got to be honest, I don't see 'everyone' doing it at all.

Let me be clear, Arsenal are excellent at corners. The delivery is fantastic and they have some great headers of the ball. But the also have far more free headers, not just due to great movement and tactics, but by taking out the goalkeeper.

No problem with the set pieces. It’s the diving and feigning injury which I despise.

He’ll have to learn how to step up in big games first. Has been anonymous every time we have faced them I also get the feeling he doesn’t fancy the physical side of the battle too much either. I’m surprised more teams don’t go and put a hit on him early in the piece.
You are Danny Murphy and I hereby claim my £5

That would be obstruction.

Interesting away games for these and Chelsea today. Will be an interesting title race if the Dippers have a couple of draws.

Was out and didn’t watch the game. Let’s ask laugh at Arsenal. Let me get this straight-Arsenal are title challengers and City aren’t? Ok then…

If City were to get its shit sorted, it’s imperative we get to second place. It’s much easier to chase one team than leap over three.

Having said that I Will be relieved when we hit 40 points!!

I think they do look better than us. I'm not sure our injuries are clearing up any time soon, and even if they do the players will need some time to get up to speed. However, after the run we've been on they should have opened up a decent gap on us and they haven't.

I suppose you are correct but I can hope/dream. Often, see the Rags, it’s the hope that kills you

Arsenal are brilliant at set pieces, but won't make many friends with the amount of time it takes to actually take them

I hadn't noticed until Martin Keown referenced this deliberate tactic whilst commentating at their CL game in Porto last season, but if a corner gets headed out for another corner the ball is literally out of play for 2 minutes.

The match officials never seem to include it when calculating the added time, especially today when only 5 minutes were given (despite it taking almost 3 minutes from Saka's "winning" goal to it being disallowed)
