Obviously for the time being Pep is here to stay but when the time does come, do we feel Arteta would be a good option given his close work with Pep?

Problem for internal candidates like Arteta is that he’s presently a part of the Pep ‘machine’ but when Pep leaves - he takes the machine with him - so Arteta would be left building from the ground up to replace not only Pep but all of his exceptional back room staff. I guess if Arteta is the chosen one - Pep et al and try and get him ready and start to build a team around him.

It's a tricky situation.

Will Arteta (if he succeeds Pep) become his own man or be a facsimile of Pep and his tactics.

The temptation for the owners and top brass is the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" line. But a new top level manager can't work under another's philosophy without putting something of their own personality in there.

In fact I wouldn't rate any manager that allowed himself to be dictated to completely on tactics. Follow an outline plan or structure/style of play and adapt it to suit.

I hope Arteta does take over, but I also hope he has the strength of character to lead the team in his own image, but with the Pep's DNA somewhere in there as well.

i'd quite like to see him take charge of league cup games for the next 2 years

I think Erik tan Hag and Mauricio Pochettino will be the club's top two choices.

I'm hoping Pep signs on for longer than the two years.

Would be a huge step up for Arteta.
The relationship you have with players as an assistant is hugely different to when you're the main man.
Sometimes the coach moving up and the players don't handle that change well.
Sometimes it's just easier to bring an outsider in, Pep will take most of his backroom staff with him when he leaves anyway.

I am sure City have a succession plan in place already and at present Arteta must be in pole position. Wouldn't be surprised if he went to another club first to cut his teeth on a fixed contract like Pellegrini had when he came here and knew from the start that Pep was coming. Our club is now based on the Barcelona model so whoever comes in will have to work with the current template. I think most of the backroom staff will stay. All the CFG clubs are following the same philosophy. I also wouldn't be surprised if Pep remained with the CFG group in a more senior role until he takes an international job. He may even end up as England manager. These are incredible times to be a City fan.

I seem to recall Tito Villanova doing a good job at Barcelona after taking over from Pep.

Tough one to call, because historically, it's easier to remember the failures (Malcolm Allison, Peter Taylor, Brian Kidd), than the occasional success (Bob Paisley).

Ten Hag would be the obvious choice IMO if he can carry on doing a good job after losing De Jong, De Ligt, Ziyech & a few others.

Lucien Favre, Julien Nagelsmann and Paulo Fonseca are another three who are all enjoying success playing football that Pep would appreciate.

Less obvious would be someone like Roger Schmidt who Pep was a huge fan of at Salzburg and Leverkusen, but would need a european comeback.

Pep will have a list of suitable candidates.

The only question I would have about Orteta is: does he have the tools (or balls) to manage the big egos?
