labour mp barry gardiner on the daily politics today was asked is labour still committed to leaving the single market. his answer was yes and labour wanted to try and get the benefits of the single market. mcdonnel on the robert peston show also said similar. if labour want to remain in the single market, they are going a funny way of showing it. they have a very similar approach as the conservatives it seems.... a bit confusing.

from about 3.15 onwards.

They are hanging on for a second GE and don't want to lose all the leave voters they hoovered up.

When have they said they want to stay in the single market? It's doing my head in watching the media twist the election result to push an agenda of a "soft Brexit." The only ones that took a clear "remain" push were SNP and Lib Dems - SNP lost seats, Lib Dems have few seats.

Labour want tariff-free access. This IS NOT wanting to stay in the single market. Whether they can get it remains to be scene but as McDonnell said, he interprets Brexit as out of the single market.

Everyone apart from the remoaners has always interpreted Brexit as out of the single market. Soft and Hard was invented to try and prevent it but it fools no-one. Which is why Brexit means Brexit was actually quite a factual statement.

Unfortunately they are right in knowing that the public are generally very easy to manipulate.

they haven't, but I keep seeing it being mentioned. completely agree with that bit. every news show pretty much has a remianer on. all I've seen these past few days is anna soubry, hesiltine, gina miller, nicky morgan, alistar campbell, I've seen them more the past few days then ever. the media appear to want a soft brexit.

Faisal Islam was saying the Tories will be reassessing their stance on a hard Brexit to a softer Brexit and staying in the single market for businesses after the election result. They keep insinuating Labour want to stay in the single market. Same tactics May was using, repeating brazen lies about Labour's policies.

Labour need to call them all out on it.

Don't think there is any doubt the Brexit we get now will be very different to the Brexit we would have had if there had been no election. Just the pressure from mps within the conservative party will see to that , irrespective of the pressure from other parties or media.

im not sure it will be that different tbh. both labour and the conservatives have very similar approaches to it. both want out the single market and both want the closest possible access. tbh mate its a confusing anyway, who knows what we will end up with aha

Not sure want out is the right way of putting it, both accept unless we agree to free movement and other EU red lines we have to come out of the single market. As you say both want as close as they can get to it. What I think has changed is where before May, Fox and Davis put the emphasis on border controls and immigration targets at the expense of market access, that will change now led by Ruth Davidson and Phillip Hammond willing to compromise on movement to gain a better deal on trade. Think we will see the tens of thousands immigration target disappear. Wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of cross party involvement in negotiations eventually.

McDonnell's stance of finding mutual wants and building from there in negotiation is more sensible than May's fist banging and feet stomping approach though. The EU will be more inclined to think they can walk all over us with May as PM after this.
