Assisted dying

This should be a referendum matter IMHO, having a government or relatives you don't know have control of your life is madness.
Nobody is suggesting that. Power of Attorney is already a thing anyway.

There needs to be a conversation about when the time comes that it is more humane for a person to be allowed to die.

If there is legislation that people can agree to and sign to say that they want to die under <insert circumstances> here, then the wishes are known and can be carried out. This would have to be alongside a doctor signing that the person is of sound mind too.

It already kind of happens when treatment is switched to palliative care. All that would change is they would die at the start of that, rather than being pumped full of morphine and allowing whatever disease/illness take its toll.

If there isn’t a plan in place, then assisted dying shouldn’t be available. This negates bad relatives trying to abuse the system.

I‘d have all Care Homes ask each new person that starts living with them to offer this alongside an Advanced Care Plan, so that when the time come to make the decisions, wishes are already known.

The NHS can keep people alive for too long. Knowing when the tipping point of treatment becoming detrimental can take too long to decipher.

It's an incredibly naïve view to believe that people surrounding an individual always want what's best for that individual, people may very well trust their family but there are a lot of people out there who don't and would be horrified at giving people the power over their life or death.

God forbid the government or council or some Shipman type gets real legal control over who lives and dies.
Who is proposing that the government gains that control, though?

I can only speak for myself, but I am advocating for qualified individuals being given the right to medically-assisted death. I am not looking to have Sunak swing round, look me over, and say "yeah, he's no longer economically productive nor can he serve in the military, so have at it" (which, by the way, is actually the main reason suicide was illegal for so long, underneath all that religious and moral posturing).

I want to have the right to request to be psychologically evaluated for fitness to make the decision and, if passed fit, to be able to choose to end my life in the most controlled, pain-free, and least traumatic (to myself and my loves ones) way possible. I do not want to be kept alive, through ever-declining qualify of life, simply so other people can avoid having difficult conversations. My right to life and death should not be contingent on whether it makes other people comfortable or uncomfortable.

Currently, it is actually others that get to decide for us, regardless of the suffering imposed on us, which seems to be the state you wish to avoid.

Referendum mate with it all spelled out.

It shouldn’t be referendum because it’s an individual choice.
It’s got fuck all to with anyone else.
It should be subject to strict and stringent rules and regulations but the idea itself, no chance.
It’d likely be taken over by the god squad.

All it would ask is if you were in favour of allowing assisted dying or not. It wouldn’t solve anything.

Something as important as this shouldn’t be allowed to be taken over by those who don’t like the idea. Someone who doesn’t know me or my reasons for choosing this way (hypothetically) shouldn’t even be in the conversation.
It’s as personal as it gets.
