Atmosphere 2024/25

My opinion has always been that the Etihad as a stadium has been a dead duck from the off due to one simple fact, it was built for the Commonwealth Games as a multi-sport venue, & despite removing the track it originally had, it's never felt like a purpose built football stadium, to me anyway. This coupled with transitioning from the complete opposite, namely, a historic English atmospheric stadium on the other side of the city, compounded matters.

That's not to say it hasn't (& continues to) had it's moments, European nights, derbies, title deciders and relegation 6-pointers (Newcastle, 2004) but it always reverts to type. These things are hard to change no matter how much work goes in imo. In fact, I think a good parallel is Juventus & the original Stadio Del Apli they occupied after the 1990 World Cup, it just never worked despite a huge vocal support base, eventually forcing them to downsize to a purpose built smaller football stadium.

Don't get me wrong, the Etihad has been our home for more of my lifetime than Maine Road was, so it'll always be 'special' to me, but I would have loved to have seen us take a similar approach, a smaller, say 50k seater, purposely built purely for football & designed in partnership with the fans. I can't think of any stadiums built originally for singular events/games etc that have been successful in terms of atmosphere after being occupied after, whether us, West Ham, Juventus et al.

The club has ticket compliance officers now ? And what’s their job. To ban fans who use ticket sites but to allow the club themselves to keep using them more and more.

If clubs stop supplying these sites the whole thing stops and atmosphere returns.

I’m pretty sure there isn’t a waiting list?

I saw a video today it and reinforced what Liverpool fans have said to me. They don’t know anyone who gets the £13 tickets that are quoted on here from time to time. There was an article in the athletic, last week, about touting at Anfield and those ‘cheaper’ tickets were mentioned and how they typically end up in the hands of the touts and sold off for exorbitant fees

Great work by the 1894 group again highlighting these issues and asking the questions.

I recently emailed the ticket compliance manager and amongst other things asked on average how many tickets are given to reseller sites for home and away games. The response I received was ' this is information that is not shared publicly'.

At least you got a reply Ed. :-)

Nest time you email the ticket compliance manager, say you are a Barcelona fan and you need 8 away tickets for the Manchester derby at United in April.

Litmus Test

If the real reason why the atmosphere is so poor for most home games is due to a mixture of overpriced tickets and tickets being sold to tourists. The game against SSR this weekend should be a real test to see if this theory is true, given that;

- Tickets are pretty much on open sale to blues.
- Ticket prices are cheap.
- The match is scheduled at prime time for getting out and having fun, plus it doesn't finish too late and isn't on a school night.
- The game is against a team with multiple links to our horrible neighbours.
- It could lead to our only chance for silverware this season.

It's unlikely to be a sell out due to the lower opposition and cup round, but given those present will be the young and enthusiastic local demographic that many on here say are being priced out. The atmosphere should be electric. Will be interesting to see/hear.

Awaits the Salford chants of football in a library.

My theory is that the overall atmosphere is largely governed by the noise made by fans closer to the roof, so I am going to predict it will be the opposite of electric. Salford fans will fill the roofspace with noise and we won't be able to compete. Small clubs getting giddy on their big day out have their own type of atmosphere with their "Is this a library" songs and I predict an afternoon of that.

A game like this tends to be full of kids and families, not racous blues on the piss, so I don't see it as a good gauge of our atmosphere. All of these giants v minnows cup ties are the same at any stadium. It will be a full stadium though.

So when the atmosphere is rubbish on Saturday, are you going to come on here claiming that its the ultimate proof that overpriced tickets and tourists don't make a difference.

Completely ignoring other variables such as:

The fact it's pretty much a guaranteed win against a league 2 side
The fact that it'll be -1 degrees
The fact that the crowds will largely be made up of young families, many attending their first city game

A proper litmus test would be to have a local crowd in for a Derby, then we'd see what a difference it makes

A few early renditions of
' You dont come from Manchester '

followed by
'Your'e fucking shit'

should set the tone !!

Unfortunately we won't be able to compete with away fans in SS3 under the roof.

In fact this is a fantastic game for all the halfwit's who think acoustics don't matter.

Listen to how clearly you can hear the Salford fans in SS3, compared to how quiet our fans in SS1 will sound

Acoustics.....some people are deaf to it !!

Hence why Leicester away is one of the best for away fans. We are close to the roof and hardly any tourists.

Won't suit their argument, so will continue with the same rabble
