Atmosphere Thread | 2025/26

When did clapping the team off become a 'thing you must do' ?
I spent years on the Kippax and never did anyone stay and watch a lap of honour or clap the team off. The final whistle went and you cheered/clapped and almost immediately turned and went for the exit.
Now it seems it's something else to attack match going fans with.
This thread is full of people who don't go but criticise those that do.
I cheer, shout, swear and sing for 90+ minutes but when that whistle goes I'm off, I clap as I leave but that's it.

Apparently thats not good enough though. (Shakes head and presses post reply)

It's the not rights who would rather have a pint in the bar/concourse than get to their seats...apathy on a huge scale...

Totally agree, and I normally have a four hour journey home, but stayed over tonight. Stayed until the end of the game and the tram lines were crazy. Awful transport system.
 
Great fans Sunderland. So great they gave us the full "great fans" repertoire: WWYWYWS, football in a library, is there a fire drill and your support iss fucking shit. Great fans.
And something about fucking the mags of course. Plus a couple of ditties I didn't quite catch from my seat.

Fair play to them. We weren’t on our game today, otherwise it would be you’ve had your day out… which is what it felt like.

Leaving in droves from the 80 minute mark onwards so that by the final whistle less than half the stadium are left is the sort of thing a fanbase does when it’s disgusted with their team’s performance and result, usually the actions of a fanbase who want the manager sacked… yet we do this every week.

Perhaps the ones who leave early are those that invade the pitch when there's a trophy to be lifted.
Or perhaps there are more trams, trains and buses on those days (spoiler - there aren't).
Or perhaps the excuses are excuses rather than reasons after all.

I’m actually praising City for something they invested in and created, which I took pictures of and posted on Blue Moon, which was pretty much an exclusive at the time, after sorting out the flag room with the other 1894 lads.

They took the piss and rightly so, our support is shit. Whilst it pisses me off its a fact that we can't ignore.

All they were missing from the small time wankers playbook was the "you're shit......aaaaaaahhhhhh" whenever Donnarumma took a goal kick.

At one point those in the 3rd tier were singing "fuck Hamas, murderers". Not wanting to get into the politics of a sensitive situation, that seems a strange thing to be singing at a football match? Edit - I stand corrected on this one thanks to others who could understand the almost-Geordie accent better than I could!

Had a great weekend in London for the league Cup final against Sunderland, I thought they were 99% top drawer fans . Even when we were drunk enough to sing about being drunk when you die in their pub . Like em a lot .

They were singing ‘fuck the Mags, they’re murderers’.
The Mags being Newcastle, the Magpies.

They were also singing a lot about them being horse punchers, about Shearer being illegitimate and shite for England.
 
I like Sunderland fans.

They are a friendly bunch.

Better than Newcastle fans, who are deluded.

I love banter as well between football fans.

So, I’m not going to have a go at Sunderland fans.

Its not a coincidence today's atmosphere was better Its down to Sunderland fans continuously singing. It takes both sets of fans to create a good atmosphere 90% of the time.

Quite happy to be corrected, but from our seats in block 119, it sounded as though the first disrespectful chants (at 3-0 when the game was drifting, and boredom was kicking-in) originated from the home fans.

"BEATING YOU WHEN WE WERE SHIT!"

A few people around me commented that it wasn't necessary.
