Atmosphere Thread | 2025/26

We always stay to applaud the team at the end of games. Recently watching to see how many stay. I think gradually the numbers are growing, probably 10000 yesterday.
However the good folk in the South Stand don't stay, apart from away fans. Yesterday by the time hands were shaken and the players went to South Stand(first) there was not one supporter there. In the bottom tier. But at recent games it is the same. Though I missed Brighton game.
This isn't a criticism just a fact.

Away , most fans stay to applaud the team, but not at home.

I wanted to ask if there was a reason for this, get out early, fag time, pub calling, get the first tram, bus etc.

It's a personal choice I get that, and some may not know the players go round the ground and thatPep encourages it.

I know it's not a cup final, but Mrs Asa never wants to leave, goes (alone ) to her seat at 20 to KO. Match Day is all day for us so we are not in a hurry.

I sit in the South Stand (015) and always stay in my seat until the last player has left the pitch.

From where I am it looks like every section is the same and people leave early in their droves. I don’t get this constant obsession with blaming the South Stand for all our atmospheric problems.

I’ve suggested to the club in the past that they could use contactless scanners like you use on the met. They become active after full time and if you scan your ticket you get extra ticket points (or other benefits like discounts or free upgrades). You could work it so staying until the final whistle is 10 points. Then 10 mins after is 20 points etc.

Ten goals, debutants scoring and performing well, 11 points above the rags and ragettes, League Cup semi-final, well placed in the Champions League, FA Cup draw on Monday, second in the PL and a new stand to open in 2026.

There is much to look forward to.

We are all on the same side here. Differences of opinion are bound to exist. However, if we focus on the facts and be objective there remains a good chance of real progress.

Lets work together. We are now at a crucial point where well thought through proposals about what is the best chance of improving the atmosphere in the stadium can be taken forward.

There is time for the leadership of the atmosphere group to pause and an opportunity for mature reflection.

It is very important to have the debate through this forum, especially now that atmosphere group have taken an early stance to consolidate in the small South Stand lower. This seems unnecessarily premature as does the questionnaire which is weighted towards the South Stand as other posters have mentioned.

Reasonable questions have been asked on this forum to try and understand the logic of the atmosphere group`s current stance.

Despite the best efforts from active fans, fundamentally there are inherent issues with the South Stand that cannot be overcome if CITY want a proper home end.

Atmosphere Improvement

All views are welcome. Lets focus on facts.

The club is investing significantly in the North Stand and surrounds the benefit of CITY fans and to help ensure the financial sustainability of the club for the long term. Further information on the North Stand is intended to be released in 2026.

We must make the most of this opportunity.

The best chance is to give backing to the North Stand, accept that some will want to remain in the South Stand, and for as many as possible from the atmosphere group to review their position and set up in the North Stand. Let us have unity and common sense.

North Stand - Advantages - Large on ONE level - 9,500 seats * / safe standing

What do you agree with below?

What do you not agree with and why?
  1. One large home end.
  2. New, wrap-round design, better acoustics, visually impressive and dominant.
    3,000 minimum rail seats /safe standing.
  3. 1,500 ? extra rail seats can be incorporated down part of both sides.
  4. 4,700? General Admission (GA) seats.
  5. There is more chance these fans will join in the singing. The rear and the side rail seats (if added) will envelop the GA. The sound will BOOM from the back and below. More fans will be able join in on ONE level.
  6. Pricing - lower priced rail seats compared with the existing South Stand lower level.
  7. 3,000 rail seats will probably be the cheapest in the stadium.
  8. No impact on the majority of existing fans in the current North Stand on the new level.
  9. 300 GA+ seats near the front of the huge, new level will have no impact on the atmosphere that can be generated by 9,200 fans behind.
  10. A proper, big, dominant, visually impressive home end on level 2.
  11. Flags can be prominent as they are in Newcastle`s home end opposite the away fans.
  12. Not split for PL matches and not allocated to away fans for cup matches.
  13. A real and great opportunity for a new beginning, refresh and renewal.

North Stand - Disadvantages

South Stand - Disadvantages

What do you agree with below?

What do you not agree with and why?
  1. Split over 3 levels
  2. No cohesion between the 3 different levels. The upper tier is separated from the lower tier which it cannot see and often cannot be heard.
  3. Too small with a low rake at the lower level
  4. Sound deadening overhang at the rear of the lower level.
  5. Not a `proper, complete end by any definition or in comparison with other clubs.
  6. The middle and upper levels are allocated to away fans for cup matches. They usually dominate the singing.
  7. The SS design does not work well for atmosphere. It does not seem to be improving.
  8. There is little scope for it to be much better due to the stand`s layout.
  9. Away fans will always be located in the SS due to access and egress, a dedicated coach / car park and police / health and safety requirements.
  10. Pricing - the lower level safe standing higher priced compared with the rear of level 3.
  11. Barely visible on TV.
South Stand Level 1 - Advantages - 3,000 safe standing

1. It is currently an area where the best atmosphere is generated more frequently.
2. It has an active group who have put in time and effort in building mainly the lower 1 into a safe standing area.
3. Displays.

They are only visible for a short time, pre-match before being rolled away. The amount of time, effort, and cost of displays is significant.

How much of an atmosphere generator, are the displays?

4. Some fans are settled and prefer level 1 viewing.

5. Some fans prefer `banter` with away fans.
How does this contribute to the atmosphere and supporting the team?

6. Some like the type of facilities on the level 1 concourse.

What will be the better chance of improving the atmosphere? One large North Stand on ONE level, or a small, split, lower South Stand?

It wasn't an atmosphere post really.
Definitely not a criticism, it's just an observation.
I Definitely agree with the points suggestion.
For what it's worth I don't think the South Stand has any more responsibility for creating an atmosphere than other parts of the ground.

The teams were out and here's a picture of the South Stand. Most still on the concourse and more interested in having a beer than welcoming the players. Same in 110/111.

A different point that we were discussing with the other poster. But yes, I agree Col that plenty in SS1 take their seats late. It’s frustrating, especially if we have a display planned that requires the majority of fans to be in their seats but also because it would be good to see the fans getting it going before the match kicks off. We can’t exactly frog-march them to their seats though! I also can’t criticise too much because I’ve been guilty of it in the past.

As @jrb said, the new South Stand bar that was installed a few seasons ago has definitely had an impact. Is there a solution? I think there is but it’s a controversial one - stop serving beer 15 minutes before kick-off. They do this at Anfield - even in the away end - and it gets more fans in their seats a good while before kick-off.

I’ve got loads of videos boss …. That’s my YouTube channel but there are other channels as well …. Don’t expect that kind of atmosphere every fucking week because we have never had that and never will. Also we don’t film everything every fucking minute every week . When city fans are on form we are fantastic , mainly away but at home too in big games. What do you do to enhance the atmosphere ?

Shouldn’t you be helping your fellow north stand blue wall mates ?

Most want to get on trams , supporters clubs coaches , miss traffic , buses etc etc. list is endless … plus stewards near kippax corner and up to 007 do start throwing us out

I will give credit to Newcastle for their support in general throughout the season at St James Park, and more so for most of their fans staying until the final whistle and applauding the team as they walk around the pitch.

FWIW, I have got a mate who is thinking about giving up his Elland Road season card because the atmosphere at Leeds has plummeted. The "I Predict a Riot", end of game singalong is too little too late for some Leeds fans.

There is a solution, though not one the club themselves can instigate, let people have a beer in their seats. It’s about time this outdated unnecessary draconian rule was binned.

Interesting. I suppose that is habit.
But Stewards trying to throw me out wouldn't work.
I can understand that everyone has a different priority.
Got home at 3.30pm today after yesterday's game. I love staying over as it's 45 years since I left and it's amazing now IMO. I really enjoy the history and culture which I took for granted in my youth and joe Holts days.
I used to be desperate for the next pint, now I can pace myself-;)

Sounds good. Another chant could be for one side to lead with Yaya, Ya Ya Yaya, Yaya Yaya Toure.
Second side takes over with Kolo, Kolo Kolo, Kolo Kolo Toure

The south stand is the only place with any atmosphere whatsoever
