Atmosphere yesterday

They regularly do the call to arms on Twitter, telling us to bring our flags, inflatables and singing voices.

What are the people in that picture doing? STANDING UP to wave their flags and inflatables.

The behaviour of the club and its hired guns (ShowSec) INSIDE the stadium is a contradiction to what they are asking for there.

Only a very select number of blocks are allowed to stand up and that is where what little noise there is comes from.

Yet against Sunderland, the match they asked people to bring flags/inflatables/singing voices, ShowSec were at their aggressive worst in trying to get the outer fringes of the 'allowed' standing area, Block 109, to sit down... no doubt with the threat of bans or eviction (it's happened to several in there).

So how, Manchester City, are we supposed to follow your instructions when you do NOTHING to facilitate an improvement to the atmosphere? The sterile atmosphere can be blamed in part on the fans, but in my opinion more on the club that does everything it can to stop fans having fun. People are INTIMIDATED into not expressing themselves by the pervasive feeling of 'sit down and shut up' that has spread around the ground.

Either create more areas to stand, sing, wave your flag/bananas, or stop pretending to care about the atmosphere and let our ground replace the Emirates as the laughing stock of English football.

NB: I know many want to sit, more than want to stand. But there are ways to drag those who want something different together elsewhere in the ground. Club campaigns, empowering the 1894 Group to 'recruit', or something. I am just one of many who would relocate if they freed a few blocks post-expansion for a big atmosphere project.

Good post.

I had to relocate from Block 109 with my SC as I was regularly threatened with the possibility of being evicted because I stood up.
I'm not alone in this either, and a few Blues have SC's still in 109 but actually walk around to another block to stand there to avoid the conflict with Showshit staff.

I call on City as not being assed about the atmosphere, instead more concerned about people buying hospitality.
Meetings have been organised in the past (which I attended) and a few suits employed by City have shown interest in our views - but I'm seeing no improvements.

They tried a singing section which was a complete disaster as most of the tickets went to New fans who weren't even assed about creating atmosphere.

The main problem is different departments at the club who will have an effect on the Atmosphere having little to no engagement with each other.

As LoveCity rightly points out - it is almost like being inside some institution, afraid to stand out of line in fear of being banned from the stadium, arrested by GMP and so on.
This has an effect on the atmosphere.

We have discussed the solutions plenty of times now, City don't seem to be taking action (or atleast updating us on their actions to improve atmosphere) and everything we've seen them do has been a cheesefest and wank.

ooooh we're man city - we listen to you on city voice - we take your opinion via countless surveys... but we still do our own thing.

People need to realise there is two clubs in operation at City - the one we support, the team, the actual football side - and the other side, which make all the decisions but you don't see and they don't see you.

but the "call to arms" was an exception not the rule. the only other time they used their powerful social media to influence the atmosphere this season was pushing our plea for bring scarves to the derby

1894 have asked them over and over again and have asked them to push singing for last 3 home games

once the people who pay thousands for their boxes each year get pissed off with empty seats and lack of noise and feedback that into the club as part of a downturn in their match day experience certain departments in the club will then see the value of keeping the people in the cheap seats happy and helping to build the sort of atmosphere traditional fans want

Great post.

I was all up for bringing my flag etc. But what the fuck am I going to do with them in 105? Soon as I stand up and anything it's 'Sit down and be quiet., Only open your mouth if you wanna slag off players'.

What was daft on Wednesday was taking in my inflatable football into 112 and being questioned about this by Stewards, I rightly point out that City have asked us to bring inflatables.
Upon throwing the ball around and fellow blues having a giggle with hitting the ball around the killjoy stewards then grab this ball and proceed to keep it.

As I said before, two seperate sections of the club which have a big impact on the atmosphere not communicating with each other.
The online crew will be posting up stuff asking fans to create atmosphere, whilst the stewards are elsewhere arranging how to control the "football hooligans"

never noticed this before, but I got to my seat about 5 min before the second half kicked off and people in 110-112 were all sat down and the rest of the stadium, 3rd tier west stand included, were all stood up. then as soon as the players came out and the second half kicked off they all sat down and 110-112 stood up. really couldn't get my head round that. if they can stand up at half time why can't they stand up for another 90 and sing!

yet i got banned for having the audacity to make a thread about it weeks ago....now that its almost too late it seems ok though....

I'd love to have a word with someone at the club about these sort of things cause it's ruining my match day experience. Encouraging us to bring inflatables and flags and then taking them off us inside isn't on. I was overlooking the kippax corner on wednesday and the stewards and showsec were trying to sit down everyone in 109, despite the fact that the club have allocated such tiny singing sections in the first place. We need a big stand, either fuck off the away fans and have the south stand or change EL1 into a singing section, encourage everyone to stand and sing, and we wont have this problem. I really don't like the plans for the expansion in terms of what's happening with the away fans, we have the chance to make a sort of kop end and all we are doing is spreading the away fans over three tiers instead of two, which in my opinion will just reduce the atmosphere. I really don't want us to permanently turn into the new library of the country, especially after laughing at all the top teams in the country for having the same problem for years. Something needs to change.

The funny thing about the club as well, is that they encouraged the Poznań. They used it on promotional picture and videos, they talked about it, they asked people about it, they showed articles that commented on it and they even printed t-shirts with the instructions of how to do it on:
screen20110325212334.jpg

...and to do that you have to stand up.

However in the seats the club's stance on being proactive atmosphere makers is very different with people being told to sit down constantly and little videos on the screen at half time telling us that they get more complaints about standing than anything else.

Fucking hypocrites!

Im a season ticket holder but when money needed I work for Showsec at the Etihad as i did on Wednesday and can tell you now that in our briefings we are never told to clamp down on standing, its just people in the aisles obviously to keep them clear.
