Maybe we should call it "The Wembley of the North"...

The same name/claim when Maine Road opened in 1923. What goes around comes around. - great.

Just out of interest I know in the late 60s early 70s 63,000 was common place for the derby matches and the 81 quarter final attracted a crowd of 52,000. So can any older blues remember the season the capacity dropped as surely when we hit 54k that we be our largest home attendance since that season.

Im guessing 72/73?

Yes.

Last 63,000 crowd was Nov 6th 1971 v United, 3-3. I was there.

The capacity dropped because seats were put in the North Stand after it had been standing for a couple of years after it was built.

The last official (!) 54,000+ gate was Sunderland in the 5th Round of the FA Cup in 1973.
The capacity was then about 54,500 with seats in the North Stand.

It was trimmed shortly afterwards to 52,600 after the report into the Ibrox Disaster was published.
It stayed at that level for a number of years.

It was certainly still 52,600 (or 500) by the early eighties when I first went. It's the kind of thing you remember when you're 9.

But this can't be true. I read that Liverpool would have the 3rd biggest stadium in England by the time it's finished.

That could be true.

Third behind the swamp and Etihad.

they're looking at 59k once their's has finished which will put them in fourth behind the swamp, us, and the emirates
Conveniently ignoring Wembley?

Premier League Stadiums... if any stadium you could add Twickenham (82,000)
