Attendances

when we go to 54k there will be people in the mefia with their red pens desperate to circle any empty seats (i wouldn't let his paper anywhere the stadium but thats me) as there will of course be games that attract less fans. which is a shame. the bigger shame though is have a stadium with 8 thousand fans locked out, in fact its criminal, once bulit, the facility apart from a few extra staff costs the same to run so that extra 8000 fans are 99% sheer profit, not game after game cos that wont happen but many of the prem games and the cup games as the games reach the latter stages. that is a potential 8000 drinks, programmes, shirts and so on. if even a thousand of those 8 stick around as floaters we make more dosh, bearing mind the waiting list ready to buy seasoncards right now. so you tossers out there ready with your red pens go fuck yourself cos we are growing, we are winning titles , we are Manchester City. youv'e fucking lost. deal with it.

Just out of interest I know in the late 60s early 70s 63,000 was common place for the derby matches and the 81 quarter final attracted a crowd of 52,000. So can any older blues remember the season the capacity dropped as surely when we hit 54k that we be our largest home attendance since that season.

Im guessing 72/73?

1972/73 season, when the seats were installed in the North stand.

It was always planned that seats would be installed, but the stand was operating during 1971/72 without them, though I remember each section, in turn, being cordoned off and empty during a match until the games towards the end of the season.

From the Etihad Expansion materials....

Current match day capacity: 47,670

Expansion:

North & South Stands - 6,250 each
Pitch side - 2,000

New capacity: 62,170

So, next season, shouldn't we have a 47,670 + 6,250 + 2,000 = 55,920 capacity?

The last official (!) 54,000+ gate was Sunderland in the 5th Round of the FA Cup in 1973.
The capacity was then about 54,500 with seats in the North Stand.

It was trimmed shortly afterwards to 52,600 after the report into the Ibrox Disaster was published.
It stayed at that level for a number of years.

You've answered a question here that I used to wonder about occasionally, which is why we could have a crowd of 54,478 for the Sunderland game in February 1973, after the North Stand was seated, yet when I was a kid (I attended my first match in 1975) the capacity was always given as 52,600. I assumed that for some reason they must have left a little part of the stand as terracing in the first year, then put seats in that part afterwards. However, the capacity being reduced to implement requirements following the report into the Ibrox Disaster makes sense.

I think the capacity stayed at 52,600 until the summer of 1989, when all terraces had their capacity reduced (by 15% or 20%, IIRC) in the wake of the Hillsborough Disaster; as I recall, this was originally billed as a temporary move pending the Taylor Report but, unsurprisingly in the circumstances, the measure remained in force until grounds had to go all-seater. I assume that it was the first time ever that the capacity of the ground had dropped below 50K (apart from perhaps on a temporary basis when they were working on the new North Stand in the seventies).

Anyway, based on worsleyweb's figure of 54,290, it looks like we'll fairly soon have our biggest home gate since 1973.

EDIT - Though, if Chicago Blue is right, we'd beat the Sunderland game and the 55,023 that saw the game against Derby in April 1972, meaning we'd have the biggest crowd since 63,326 watched the famous 3-3 Manchester derby in November 1971. That one won't be topped even after they've developed the North Stand, though.

No because the North Stand works involves the removal of a few rows of seats at the back level 2 as well as level 2 corporate facility and perimeter seats.

Hope they put more trams on .......

i bloody well hope so, its bad enough getting back to ashton as it is.

double trams should be the minimum on match days, its a disgrace having to squeeze in like sardines on a single carriage especially with children and the elderly trying to get on.

and quiet a few aisle seats in the lower tier.

So does the same apply to the north stand? In which case will the final capacity be 62,170 or somewhat lower? 8000 seems a lot to add in the last phase, with the pitch side already done.
