Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights

We're going in search of the Aurorae for Christmas and New Year on a Hurtigruten round trip from Bergen to Kirkenes and back.

Let me know what day you are due in to Kirkenes. I'm the previous stop. You don't stop for long here, but if I'm not doing much that day, I'll get on board and say hello.

We reckon it should be the 29th, but just to double check we're on the Finnmarken leaving Bergen on the 22nd.

Anyone thinking of going to Iceland to try and see the Northern Lights should do so this winter. Two fold; Apparently this winter will be the best in years for potential activity, and Iceland are hiking up taxes on hotels, tours etc next year from 10% to 30% (figures might be slightly out but its a significant rise!)

Myself and the GF did a weekend in Reykjavic in February. Got a package deal through Icelandair that included flights, 4* hotel, and a Northern Lights trip for about £360 each. Had a great time. Was amazing to see the NL. Tour company drove us to a beach, about an hour out of Reykjavic, completely dark and deserted, very unique experience to be stood on an Icelandic beach at midnight, freezing your bollocks off whilst watching the sky glow. Would go back in a heartbeat, life is too short not to see things like that.

The Blue Lagoon is also well worth a visit whilst in Iceland.

Aye, that looks right. Seems like you've got a 24-hour stop in Trondheim for Christmas. Not a bad place to stop! See you on 29 Dec. You'll probably be stuffing yourselves full of breakfast at that time of the morning (0730), so if you see someone wander in to the restaurant area, wearing a City scarf, it'll be me. Have a good trip, and hope the weather's kind to you. Those big ships can roll around a bit! Hope you've got loads of dosh for all the extra trips they offer at each port... It will be a real experience - you set off from a place where you'll see the sun, then by the time you get up here, you'll have left the sun far behind and below the horizon. It's not dark like night, though, more like an overcast day. Hope the Lights shine for you - they've been rehearsing this evening.

*** BUMP***

We could be in for a real treat on Thursday night. If this weather continues and we have no cloud cover, there is a good possibility we could see the Aurora! KP rating of 5 has been issued which is pretty high, lets hope we get a glimpse!

Bump. Hope for clear skies tonight. Science bods reckon we may get to see the Northern Lights down here at this latitude. If that's the case, get yourselves up to the moors and enjoy.
