Australia's most senior Catholic charged with sex offences

Hitchens was the ultimate and when you watch Dawkins debate, there's so many times when you think "Hitchens would have won this argument easily by now".

Hitchens remains the best debater I've seen, however, once introduced to gore Vidal (he is one of hitch's heroes) then he looks like a little puppy...

Dawkins is repeitive imo, great scientist but boring debater!

I am not in the slightest bit religious, but the main reason why many Priests etc are found to be paedophiles is because that is where the Catholic church worked and actually did a lot of good for kids. Unfortunately paedophiles are attracted to where kids are and probably some people are attracted to the priesthood because of self doubt about their sexuality.
Yes there has been a cover up by the church but also in many other places such as local authority care. Some of the carers were doing a lot of good though and it's a shame to take them all with the same brush.

You seem to be confusing free will....

The institutional abuse by the Catholic Church is a haven because the hierarchy allows it to be. Regardless of how this transpires, the culprits are shielded, which in essence has been the problem. You're correct regarding 'care providers', however, this is just an evolution of the process, the emphasis on the enlightened priest 30//40 years ago was to provide the social answers to societal problems, they were social workers before there were any, what this afforded was them to infiltrate family dynamics as guards were invariably down....

The attraction to the priesthood is nothing more than the protection of self, the sooner it is held accountable without apologists getting air time the fucking better!

The attraction to the priesthood was different for different people some had a religious bent some were just bent. But hammering everyone irrespective of their actions because of the institution will result in less protection of the vulnerable.
Many priests do a great job in difficult circumstances.

Mate, no disrespect but this is actually what I currrently lecture on... the attraction dispels the psychology behind it and those who enter. You're correct, there are good priests, great imans, rabbis or granthis, what sets the catholic organisation apart (currently) is it's inability to recognise how ingrained the institutional abuse is, or acknowledgement to the mass victims (worldwide)... by taking this line it remains a haven because of its protection and canon law status....

You should stick to the last film you saw thread, Bigg, theology may be a stretch (:

As for priests facing the music.... your understanding of the Catholic Church must be quite sheltered, this is but another dirty old bastard, protected by his institution and canon law.. he'll end up with 3 Hail Marys and a reclusive lifestyle in one of the many retreats owned by the Vatican...

To put this in to perspective, the current popes main advisor has been pardoned on 2 separate incidents due to his astounding work in the 'charity' sector...

Burn that shit down!!!

Listen, my great friend, you know I love and respect the sh*t you have to offer on these boards (dodgy film and TV preferences aside...), but my 'view' on theology is no less valid than ANYBODY walking this earth. I question things on both sides of the equation. I even agree, to a degree, with your view on religion, but you can't sweep all practitioners with the same brush.

Like everywhere, there are some wrong un's, big time, but there are Priests/ Imams/ followers etc etc, whose devotion to their religion takes them on a higher plane, than we could ever know.

I'd like to think I don't judge anyone (I know I do), but most of all I hope those who know right from wrong get the just desserts life gives them, in the end.

I thought the smiley would get you (;

As for the above, mate ... totally agree, it's called mental illness!!!
