He's vastly improved since coming back from injury by every metric imaginable, but has notably removed almost all of the errors from his game that made some pause last season.

I watched Bilbao play Eibar at the end of April and it was almost a prime Vinny-esque performance. He made 11 clearances, more than any other player put together, 3 tackles, 2 interceptions and won 4 aerial duals. That's not even taking into account his passing ability, which is on par with Stones IMO.

My opinion is that he's matured considerably and would make an ideal long term partner to John at CB. If Vinny is staying, and Nico too, then I feel it makes sense to bring in a younger option in the position and if money is no object Laporte would be my pick.

Feel we may be turned off by the price this time round though.
brilliant post. totally agree .

only match I saw of him was against Barcelona in a Cup game earlier this season when Bilbao won with 9 men, was superb. I can only assume he has a higher buyout clause after he snubbed us to sign a new contract now, though?

Yes it's higher, reportedly €65m now, which is €10m more than last year. However it is set to rise again next season to €70m, so potentially this could be the window he leaves, if it's going to happen.

I'm not sure City can stomach the new buy out though. Certainly it seems we've backed off Sandro due to cost concerns. We do remain interested in Laporte and are still heavily linked, but it may have to take a bit of wrangling from Txiki and the player asking to leave to get the price down to a more acceptable level.

IMO he's the best option we could get, so, on many levels, he's worth it.

Not how Bilbao operate mate, it's "pay the release clause or fuck off" unfortunately, understandable with their limited pool of players.

To similar for me. Neither of them are what you call a dominant centre back.

Neither are Pique & Mascherano or Ramos & Varane.

I love defenders like Kompany and Bonucci but it's not like Stones and Laporte lack height, strength or the ability to compete aerially. It's just that the modern breed of center-back is someone who can tackle, head and read play but also contribute going forward by retaining the ball near the halfway line and starting counters and spreading it to the wide players.

Different leagues. Laporte and stones will get bullied by teams in the prem imo. We need a ready made replacement for vinny, either bonnuci or van dyke will do.
