Agreed and makes a lot of sense to do that. Evans is a positive in the league as he would not need to settle the way Laporte will. But the league is less an issue and financially it makes sense to approach it this way. Plus Laporte may become harder to get in the summer. I think he would be a real asset in the CL this season and gets time to settle into the league and pace of it.

IMO the main threat for Laporte is Barcelona, as he played under Valverde a lot. They seem reasonably well set with Umtiti, Pique and Yerry Mina now.

Because the people writing about it are still hedging their bets, guessing to some extent, don't have the sources, putting an alarmingly great deal of faith in the original reports from foreign correspondents.

If we are considering it or something might be imminent, it's couched enough for the person to be able to walk it back if nothing comes of it.

might be overthinking but maybe the news is coming out now after we've got otamendi tied down on a new contract. so there's less chance of him getting upset and leaving

Maybe, possibly, imminently.

Personally, I don't rate him and would rather have Evans.

He never convinced me he was good enough when we were in the first time. His heading is all over the shop and he's another who struggles when he is forced to turn and get back in.
Otamendi plays that left-hand side and has just signed a new deal.

The real issue is cover for the right when Stones is not fit and the unreliability of Vinny.

Laporte can't play on the right of a pairing.

For the money being touted, would rather get Evans as back-up for Otamendi (Fernandinho has already proved he is also able to do it)

We need to pay big bucks for another right-sided central defender.
