Serious question. Why do we have to make statements and to who exactly
Same reason Barca signed big money players like Ibra and Villa even though they already had Messi Eto'o and Pedro and had won the treble. Fresh blood can add impetus to a squad of winners but only the best (usually most expensive) will have that effect. It has a mental impact on our rival clubs and players that even though we are 12 points ahead we won't stand still and that's posotive for our fans to know as well.

Well said.

We buy players to improve the squad NOT to make statements.

But anyway, I don't think Laporte is worth more than 25m. He is not english/ HG

He is just good footballer who ended up playing as CB, I am sure there are many out there better and cheaper.

I agree about bringing in fresh blood but why does it have to be a statement signing - don't get it. If someone playing in a lower division of any league can improve us, then I would be much happier with them than "a name".

It’s a statement of intent. Say we pay £60 mill for Laporte that will be a statement to the rest of the premier league and especially Man Utd saying “we could afford Sanchez money is not an issue that’s why we spent this much on Laporte “ so it’s also to say we are not sitting back

After the Sanchez fiasco think we will looking at making a statement by buying a top defender . And hopefully bring Fred in aswell . Then come summer bring in a world class attacking striker in the mould of ascensio from Madrid .

Interesting comments. Most of City's most recent transfers have been for young, well talented individuals who arn't quite superstars yet, from non superstar teams such as Barca, Madrid, Juve etc.

It seems to me our transfer policy & club strategy will generally remain the same for years to come with a much touted long term vision/strategy.

So I think the visions/requests for some people here to suggest we will try to acquire Ascencio from Madrid or Dybala from Juve seem a bit far from the mark & against what we have been doing for a few years now.

Acquiring Laporte makes sense to me & in-line what the club are doing/building, rather than signing a galatico defender/player. The latter seems more like a United approach.

And yet if Utd spent £60 million on an uncapped centre back every single City fan would be laughing their tits off at them

If we are being honest, assuming here that Laporte is good enough to displace one of our starters, its John Stones who will probably be the one who drops to the bench this season. With Otamendi moving to RCB and Laporte to LCB.

John Stones has been below average since his return and has committed a goal causing error in every game since his return. If a top CB comes in, John will be the one needing to prove himself not Otamendi.
Was Stones brought back too soon because of Vinny's injury. To have three dependable centre backs would be a benefit to Pep
