You cant haggle over a buyout clause can you and yet have the deal struck ?????? Dont know where he has got that info from but cant be right

City would obviously rather not pay the full buy out clause unless they have to so might be exploring if Athletic might accept a bit less. Athletic obviously want to hold out for the full amount. The usual negotiating cut and thrust with the fallback on City's side of paying the full amount if necessary. They may not do so if they don't think he's worth that much - who knows?

Because the selling club can accept less than the buyout - buyout is the maximum you'll need to pay to the seller (but some other fees may apparently accrue to other parties such as agent, part owners of the player, etc.).

City decided to invest heavily on Laporte because of his youth and talent, knowing Jonny Evans, a cheaper alternative, would offer less longevity. Guardiola has wanted to sign Laporte for a long time. [El Correo]

Not as daft as it sounds - there would certainly be an attraction in a swap (plus cash) for City. Athletic probably less keen. i'd be surprised if Txiki hadn't at least tried it on them.
