I always thought the term the rags came from the early 30s when they were struggling both on and off the pitch. In 1931 they were relegated with an average crowd of 11,685, there last home game that season attracted a crowd of 3,969 v boro. A leading newspaper of the time said that things were that bad at poor old united, that they were now turning out to play in old rags. I think City fans at that time latched on to it, and its been passed down over the years.
