I wouldnt on putting the ball in the net though..

I think his stats hold up if you look at mins on the pitch.

Dzekos is a lot better than marios throughout their city careers in the league
And this season his scoring rate is outstanding

Balo has scored 1 in 587 mins
Dzeko has scored 9 in 800 mins

Over longer there is less of a difference (see below) and I think Edin has had more 'runs' in the team, as he should on form. I just think that now is a good time to give Mario a run.

Edin Dzeko (Bosnia)-Man City-22 goals-one goal every 125 minutes

Mario Balotelli (Italy)-Man City-19 goals-one goal every 149 minutes 41 seconds

Stats here: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.ftbpro.com/posts/ian.stewart.palmer/77322/all-time-premier-league-scorers-goals-per-minute" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.ftbpro.com/posts/ian.stewart ... per-minute</a>

It's called backing a city players and looking at the positives not the negatives that some fans love to do..

So why is this trait not applied to all City substitute appearances?

That's a fair point but its Balotelli who gets the slating in the media more than anyone so it's fans in a way backing the player

I also think its wanting to see him knuckle down and improve as, compared to other substitutions, we know that Mario need bring only one bit of magic to change the game.

It's been happening for a long time, not just this week (although the argument could be made that the media have been on his case for a long time).

But, anyway, that is the crux of it, isn't it?

People fail to judge him on purely footballing and professional performances (a criteria that when applied by Mancini this season has seen him completely fail to meet the required standard) and this is why they don't have perspective on completely unimportant contributions like yesterday. Their view of him as an individual or as to how 'he is treated' impacts on their analysis of his performance. And that is what results in the lauding of completely bog standard contributions.

Remember, we are not talking about a new player here. Someone who you see for 20 minutes and are trying to ascertain what his game is all about. Thus, pouring over every detail of his contribution for something that might suggest positivity in the future. We are talking about a long standing player, one that has generally been a disappointment. Yet people fall over themselves to give him the same treatment - something they don't do for any other long standing players' performances, disappointment or not.

That's not from starting though. When he starts it's a goal every 160 minutes. His incredible record off the bench is what gives him his good goal scoring ratio. When he starts he's been less effective than Balotelli over his City career.

I think Dzekos in the top 3 or 4 in prem league history for goals per min

You post about Balotelli generating more comment than he is worth, on a thread about him, thus increasing the amount of comment on Balotelli.

Even those that don't like him seem unable to resist the allure of feeding the PR machine that is Mario Balotelli.

Yesterday, judging him purely on his footballing performance, I say that he played well, caused the defence more problems than Edin had all game and made more of an impact than Sinclair.
