I've given my point of view and for me he should try his utmost best in every game regardless of the opposition.
The most important thing from the incident is that he hasn't learnt a thing and hasn't grown up, which is just as important going into the new season as the other things you mentioned because it's clear that he will become a liability again at some point or another.
it's not over the top to criticise him and be annoyed that he's done it. What's over top is people making ridiculous comments like "he didn't kill anyone" which is something I'd expect an 8 year old to come up with quite frankly, in fact no, that's unfair on 8 year old's.
As for hearing a whistle, exactly my point, what he did was technically worse as it's more natural to score and he still kicked the ball away, so it's absolutely no excuse that he heard a whistle.
