Who then went on to become famous. Who have you seen? And did any make you think they'd make it big? AC/DC was the least likely for me.

A few for me:

AC/DC Electric Circus
Echo & The Bunnymen at UMIST
Whitesnake Rafters
U2 at M/cr Poly.
REM The Gallery
Oasis Boardwalk
Amy Winehouse, Matt & Phreds
Hanoi Rocks The Gallery
Inspirals Corbiere's
Stone Roses The Gallery
Lenny Kravitz International
Bangles International

Used to be regulars at the, now sadly defunct, Moles in Bath. Whoever did their bookings had an eye for good new bands and Oasis, the Smiths, Housemartins & Blur were among them.
Inevitably, I didn't see any of them but I caught Chas Jankel (with a quantity of the Blockheads), Blancmange, Eddi Reader, John Otway and a host of quality local bands. 100 ish capacity and you had to walk passed the keyboard player to get to the toilet.
Happy days!

Didn't know Amy played at Matt & Phreds :)

Love a small venue, so much more personal and involving.

Probably the biggest I saw was Mika before he became famous, seen plenty of bands who are now semi-popular on the metal scene when they were nobodies, I was one of a handful of people who saw Florence Black a few years back in a pub in Wales who are now getting pretty big, and Those Dam Crows, but Mika is probably the most well known now. I just remember the unusual vocal range and style and I think within months, maybe weeks, of that he was everywhere with Grace Kelly. Must have been in 2006 I think.

Thinking about it, not many although I am not sure what counts as a small venue. Most of the bands I like will not be regarded as 'famous'.

Pixies (supporting Throwing Muses) at Leeds Town and Country Club (1990ish)
Cranberries - not a fan (supporting Belly) at Leeds Irish Centre (1993?)
Belle & Sebastian at Manchester Town Hall (1997ish, If You're Feeling Sinister tour)
Dust Brothers / Chemical Brothers at Bradford University (1993?)
Nirvana at Birmingham Edwards No8 (1990ish, Bleach tour)
Flaming Lips (supporting Mudhoney) at London Hibernian Ballroom (1992?)
