Bands In Small Venues

The Smiths - Cov Poly
The Ting Tings - Islington Mill (small room upstairs not the larger one downstairs, music industry showcase of upcoming bands on a small label. Maybe 20 bods there including Mike Pickering)
James - Manchester town hall in the council chamber (the afternoon gig)
Toyah - some room at Warwick Uni that didn’t even have a stage! After the 3rd song she got a beer crate and stood on that.

I can’t say for certain but I’m 99% sure I saw the Ting Tings at Clynes Wine Bar in Hulme, not long before their breakthrough hit. The whole pub could only fit in about 30 people and it was about half full at best.

Not before they were famous but I took a girl I was knocking about with to see Wet Wet Wet at the Band on the Wall, in a pre tour warmup gig.

I saw REM at a small club in Worthing in the mid 80's. I think it was to promote their second album. I thought they were OK, but it didn't cross my mind they were going to turn into one of the worlds biggest bands.

Some in the audience, which couldn't have been more than 100 people, started taking the piss out of them, and Michael Stipe eventually gave up and started laughing at it.

Manics. Just before design for life went huge. Somewhere in stoke. Help me out here, my memory. Probably 200 max in the venue. Right at the front. Jdb could properly play and sing.
Epic.

Saw Athlete in the Ruby Lounge on the hottest day of the year a few years back. I recall they were doing a warm up gig for Kendal Calling.
Even before they took to the stage, there was sweat dripping off the ceiling. They took the piss by opening their set with "You've got the style" featuring the chorus "Oh, it's getting hot in here, must be something in the atmosphere"!

Who then went on to become famous. Who have you seen? And did any make you think they'd make it big? AC/DC was the least likely for me.

A few for me:

AC/DC Electric Circus
Echo & The Bunnymen at UMIST
Whitesnake Rafters
U2 at M/cr Poly.
REM The Gallery
Oasis Boardwalk
Amy Winehouse, Matt & Phreds
Hanoi Rocks The Gallery
Inspirals Corbiere's
Stone Roses The Gallery
Lenny Kravitz International
Bangles International
Was at the Gallery for Hanoi Rocks. Remember talking to Razzle.

Biggest one I can remember is The Chilli Peppers at the International 1 late 80's. Don't think it was that packed either.
Also, Jane's Addiction. Again the International, same era.
I was in America in 86 and stumbled into a club called The Belly Up in San Diego. Had no idea there was a band on. There was, Joe Satriani.
I walked straight to the front and sat at a table 6 feet from him. That was a good one lol.
