Bands replacing Iconic singers - does it ever really work?

Thin Lizzy without Phil, the Doors without Jim, Yes without Jon and Genesis without Peter would suggest not. Did go and see Queen with Paul Rogers (one of my favourite singers) and loved it but cannot stand listening to it at home. A bit like fast food. Fills a hole at the time but nothing to get excited about.

It all becomes a bit 'Tribute Act' and a bit 'cash cow' doesn't it?

I was horrified to see Lynyrd Skynyrd were playing at The Apollo recently. I thought all except one of them died in a plane crash?

Joy Division/New Order?

I feel JD were a much better band but NO didn't do too badly.
Entered to make this point

Ian Curtis wasn't replaced in Joy Division,so it is different, the rest of the group started up their own new band.

Marillion replaced fish with Steve Hogarth and changed direction to great effect. Not a tribute in any way so a bit like New Order situation, same could be said of Pink Floyd
