Banksy

like all great crafts,
painting is a skill learned over decades.

banksy has no skill or artistic merit whatsoever,
he just has a very good p.r. team
(and people who cut out stencils accurately for him).
fair play to the bloke,
he wanted to cash in and he did.
he wanted to be famous and he is,
after all, we are talking about him.
but he is nothing more than the equivalent of a number one song in the pop charts.
he will not endure.

putting a dead shark in formaldehyde isn't a skill.
writing on a tent isn't a skill.
walking round town with a plank isn't a skill.
sitting naked on a plinth isn't a skill.

there aren't many great painters who are appreciated while still alive.
bacon, hambling, freud, bomberg, auerbach et al really lifted art in the 20th century,
but we're back to square one again.
the charlatans nowadays make their easy money but in the main they will not endure.

the so-called art critics on bbc2 who ponderously fondle their mustaches and spout made-up nonsense don't help.
the so-called art sections of the big sunday papers don't
help.
they have put people off art.
it's a real shame,
because paintings can genuinely move people,
like music can.
instead, shit prints from ikea adorn the walls of living rooms.
Are you Philip Mould ;-)

Exactly, when it comes to investments people invest in everything as long as it makes them money.

Can I ask, bud, is there not a piece by 'Banksy' that makes you think/ catches your eye?

I know, from all the music I hear there are bands that I think suck balls.

However, even if I think that, somewhere, somehow, that band/s will produce a piece I like.... Even if that thought conflicts me.

I have a pretty eclectic taste in music mate, from early Bowie to Tavares and even some of Ed Sheeran. My problem with Banksy is that he's not just an edgy artist he's now a high end artist selling for top whack to very rich influential people whilst breaking a law both you and I wouldn't get away with.

He could graffiti a police station and get accolades instead of a date to attend court with a bill to clean up his mess.

I don’t know how old you are but there used to be a program called Thats Life with Ester Rantzen, they did an experiment where they but some big canvas down and let some people ride through paint on kids bikes and then ride over the canvas. They then put them in an art gallery and the so called experts were fawning over them spouting the usual bollocks about what the artist was saying when they did this etc. It showed to me what utter horseshit it is, if you put a famous signature at the bottom it would’ve sold for thousands!
