Banksy

I'm 59 also if you asked me to draw a cat it would look like a 4 year old had done it :+)
the funny thing is though,
the older you get as an artist the more you wish you could draw like a child.
children draw with incredible freedom,
they don't want it to be appreciated,
their minds aren't cluttered with the history of art
they are doing it because it gives them pleasure.

Most modern art is alien to me. I’ve been round the Tate Modern’s and I simply don’t get it. They must do okay if they can support themselves though!
you are right about so-called modern art, mate.
the trouble with places like tate modern is they are alien to most people.
and frankly that is because an awful lot of it is utter shite.
it confuses people because they think they are supposed to understand it.
everyday folk have become wary of going into art galleries.
especially when the cheeky cunts are charging an entry fee.
art exhibitions were always a philanthropic venture.
now it's about profit.

i also curate exhibitions of contemporary painters.
there are plenty of frauds who are in it solely to make a living.
i can spot them a mile off and give them short shrift.
the ones who paint for the sake of painting are the good guys.

it's not about making a living out of it.
it's about doing it because you love doing it.
you have to be honest about the marks you are making,
otherwise they will not stand the test of time.

I punched a hole in the bottom if a tin of magnolia, dangled it from a piece of string over a bedspread and hey-presto!, I'm a YouTube multi billionaire!

i know a bloke who got £4k from the arts council to make a film walking around town with a plank of wood on his head.
a perfect example of what is wrong with art-funding nowadays
and why so-called modern art is a bag of wank.

like all great crafts,
painting is a skill learned over decades.

banksy has no skill or artistic merit whatsoever,
he just has a very good p.r. team
(and people who cut out stencils accurately for him).
fair play to the bloke,
he wanted to cash in and he did.
he wanted to be famous and he is,
after all, we are talking about him.
but he is nothing more than the equivalent of a number one song in the pop charts.
he will not endure.

putting a dead shark in formaldehyde isn't a skill.
writing on a tent isn't a skill.
walking round town with a plank isn't a skill.
sitting naked on a plinth isn't a skill.

there aren't many great painters who are appreciated while still alive.
bacon, hambling, freud, bomberg, auerbach et al really lifted art in the 20th century,
but we're back to square one again.
the charlatans nowadays make their easy money but in the main they will not endure.

the so-called art critics on bbc2 who ponderously fondle their mustaches and spout made-up nonsense don't help.
the so-called art sections of the big sunday papers don't
help.
they have put people off art.
it's a real shame,
because paintings can genuinely move people,
like music can.
instead, shit prints from ikea adorn the walls of living rooms.
