See post above. Bordeaux is not always your best friend even though it makes you feel all warm inside. I am by nature a polite person and I didn't mean to offend anyone, I just git a bit fed up with "computer says no"

Need a jamesons to re-establish the equilibrium :-)

I'm not a particularly active contributor to this forum. I tend to spend a lot of times reading the threads in off topic though just to kill time in between the latest sighting of a private jet...

Unless I misread what Ric said earlier though, the main issue to me appears to be down to some people not seeing the difference between a moderator and a poster. The mods are first and foremost the latter and it is in that capacity that Damocles is acting in in this thread. The opinions that are being put across are actually of him as a poster, not as a moderator. As they've all been bandaged as the latter, that's why he's righty dismissing them.

It makes sod all difference to qualities as a moderator surely and the role they perform in that capacity.

It's a bit like me saying "Gordon Ramsey is a complete dick, so he's a shit chef"...

Damocles do you genuinely believe that someone who doesn't have data of experience of racism or homophobia should have no opinion? Or does experience in your eyes allow for second hand experience so seeing it or its results allows for an opinion. If the latter fair enough but then surely that would cover the validity of most people's opinions?

you seem to have a very upper left quartile analytical mind but as a scientist you seem to not accept the validity of people who are driven by their emotion or who are big picture or who have a mind different to the way your own functions. I am making assumptions based on your comments.

There is no data available for most
of life (though I am sure one day scientists will give us algorithms to explain everything). Much of what people feel comes from deep within and also is shaped from first and second hand experience.

What people get frustrated about is people legalistically picking on small details or small mistakes and invalidating opinion on "technicalities" that to me is what politicians do today, pivot the discussion, pick on something almost irellevant and try to doscredit individuals not arguments.

That's the whole gist of this post too many play the man and not the ball, too many think it's a one v one argument that they need to win not a discussion or argument (that has no victor)

Everybody me included needs to be a bit less pompous, a bit less bothered about the person they are debating with and a bit more focused on what the real discussions are on not irellevant point scoring .

Also Damocles most of this post is aimed at everyone not you, where only the first bit is specific to my quote of yours the rest more general

I am of the belief that there is a right way to think and act, and there is a wrong way to think and act. '..my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge' stuff. It isn't. And nor should it be. I'm not saying Damocles or any person, is right about everything, that would be ridiculous/preposterous. But I think it's fair to say, that those who have the data, and the ability to look at it rationally, have a more worthy opinion on any matter. I could be wrong :)

If an argument is there to be had then I can't blame anyone for being distinct/cutting, although I think it's a shit way to argue. I don't think everyone is here to make friends, some people are here to validate their views on a subject, and if someone presents an argument sufficient to change a mind then that's how things change I suppose. For better or worse.

Having said all that shite, a lot of the bollocks in this thread is subjective crap. Challenging views is fantastic, and arguing is brilliant, we'd all like to know a thing properly right up until it changes for whatever reason.. but I suppose 'knowing your audience' is quite important. Dunno.
 
If Ric's happy with things as they are then I'm happy with em and ultimately his is the one opinion that actually counts. There aren't many forums I frequent that would allow a thread continue like this, calling mods out isn't normally tolerated so maybe BM's not as Orwellian as some are trying to make out.
