Being English

I have British subject in my passport, as we all do, so the Queen owns us!

I personally couldn't give a stuff about the fact I'm English. I'm neither proud or ashamed of it. I just happen to be English because this is the country I was born in, and I don't remember choosing it as my preferred option.

I don't have much time for nationalism. I take people as they are, and I usually like them. I have travelled all over the world, and have come to realise over the years that we are all the same.

I'm as bothered about being English as I am about being a fish, frankly.

I'm with robbie on this one.

Rule Britannia

Proud to be british i guess those people who are so unhappy with being british forget that if their grandparents hadn't fought for their right to be sat at a computer and able to type on thus forum they would be either not here, dead from an early age or being rent boys for the nazi regime

If you hate Britain , don't consider it home and hate the british why oh why the fuck are any of you here?

You sound like that murderer yesterday interesting thought.

i once said during a world cup game in a pub full of england fans "i'd rather city's EDS won a throw in, than england win the whole world cup".

luckily most saw the funny side.

Well I class my self as English. It seems to be fashionable nowadays to not be patriotic which I don't understand.

Nothing wrong with patriotism, nationalism is where it gets fooked up with the SS wannabees

just saw this on f/book

England my England
Goodbye to my England , So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line... The French and the Germans may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English ever again.
At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected. Staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.
Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils don't learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings, Arnhem or Mons ?
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.
We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away, over the sea
We're the English from England, let's all be proud
Stand up and be counted - Shout it out loud!
Let's tell our Government and Brussels too
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack
Let the world know -
WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!

One of the very few things that make me feel patriotic is the British aversion - or perhaps disinterest is a better description - to patriotism.
We generally realise the ludicrousness of the stance and scoff at others who revel so mawkishly in it such as the Americans.
We know our qualities - understated and reasoned stoicism encapsulated so amazingly by the lady who talked to one of the murderers yesterday - and regard pride in our heritege and origin as a given. Why proclaim it at every opportunity? That's not who we are. We're more....evolved than that.
Instead we reserve patriotism for when it is justified - sporting events, jubilees, etc - in the same manner that we celebrate ourselves on birthdays or weddings. By which I mean there are times when we should celebrate our nation and our national character. And we do.
The rest of the time we get on with displaying the qualities that warrant the outburst of pride on such occasions. And the daily shouting out of our identity - who are you reminding, others or yourself? - is not one of those qualities. Quite the opposite.

Please dont confuse this fantastic attitude that is prevelent in most with hating the nation of our birth.

Our grandparents displayed unimaginable bravery and patritism so we wouldn't have to be burdened with such sentiments. So we could be proud of who we are but not ever again feel the need to shout or fight about it.

Who on this thread said they hate the British?
Im pretty sure my grandparents were pot smoking layabouts in the sixties, not sure how they fought the nazis.

I am English - and left wing. I am proud of our heritage, which sadly most people don't know about. It pisses me off that it's OK to be proud to be Irish, or Scottish, but somehow if you say you are proud to be English it makes you out to be some kind of nazi.

However, there's a lot about the England of today that I am not proud about. We seem to be turning into an intolerant nation, where it's every man for himself and screw the hindmost. In simple terms, we are becoming the personification of the Daily Mail. I don't know who to blame for this. It can't all be Thatcher's fault. But believe me, we have changed for the worse and it's not pretty. Partly I think it's down to the education system failing, and people not reading books any more. We are slowly but surely losing our civilisation.
