Police were today looking into whether an investigation should be launched following a documentary showing life on a Midland street where almost all residents claim benefits.

James Turner Street in Winson Green, which is the focus of a Channel 4 documentary
Benefits Street was broadcast on Channel 4 last night and followed families living on James Turner Street in Winson Green, Birmingham.

Police have since been inundated with comments from viewers concerned that elements of the show showed criminal activity.

Supt Danny Long, from Birmingham Police, said: “We have been aware for some time that a production company has been filming in the James Turner Street area of Winson Green on behalf of Channel 4; however we have not been actively working with the makers of ‘Benefits Street’.

“Like many people across the country, we saw the footage broadcast on the programme for the first time last night. Throughout the programme and in the hours that have followed, we have been inundated with comments from members of the public, many of whom are concerned about elements of show which showed criminal activity.

“We are currently assessing whether the content of the programme can assist us as part of any ongoing investigations or indeed whether any new inquiries should be launched in light of the material that has been broadcast. This work is ongoing and viewers will have seen for themselves that my officers have already been actively involved with some of the individuals featured.

“The Winson Green area of Birmingham is a diverse and vibrant community and the Soho neighbourhood policing team – which covers James Turner Street - enjoys a very positive relationship with local residents and community groups.

“Neighbourhood officers work alongside the area housing associations, partner organisations and the council on a daily basis to address the concerns of residents around issues of crime and anti-social behaviour – with local people very supportive of police action to tackle community safety issues.

“Patrols are taking place by the local neighbourhood team as normal today and if anyone has any concerns whatsoever, they should not hesitate to give us a call on 101.”

Yeah that's right plods - launch an investigation - that will solve everything.
Or rather it will cost the taxpayer a fucking fortune, and probably result in some daft sod getting nicked for a fiver's worth of draw.
On top of which any bridges that were being built between the police and a sceptical local community will be well and truly burnt.
'Please grass up your neighbour, and do our job for us, because we're pretty fucking useless at it'.
What a wonderful deployment of overstretched resources.
101 is an appropriate number, as it's the room I'd put the clueless fuckwits in.

Ms Roberts, a qualified youth and support worker, was arrested on suspicion of possessing Class B drugs but has not been charged with any offence and is currently on police bail.

Where in my one sentence post do I say she has been charged?

You didn't, I was just pointing out that she was not charged :)

Why will it cost the taxpayer any more than it already does? The police force is there - let them do their jobs.

On that programme, there was blatant dealing of heroin, shoplifting and benefit fraud. I would be more pissed off if they didn't do what we pay them for.

This programme has made the plods look fucking stupid, because if heroin dealing can be spotted by a camera crew from London, then why didn't the dozy cunts who police the local community notice it before?
You're seriously telling me that the police were unaware of this?
Either way, it proves how useless they are, because if they were aware, then they should have taken action years ago, and if they weren't, then they fucking well should have been.

I'd imagine they are aware of what goes on but the residents would be a bit less blatant in front of the police. What makes me laugh is how these fuck-knuckles carry on in front of the cameras - do they really think engaging in criminal acts in front of a Channel 4 camera crew will not prompt a police investigation?

Point a camera at daft folk, and invariably they will do something daft.
Some stupid scallies will see it as a chance to look like Johnny Big Potatoes, and try to hype themselves up like some kind of Brummie Scarface, when all they are doing is knocking out an eighth to students.
You'd imagine they would tone down the criminality, but then these folks are possibly not MENSA members.

Any Police force in any part of the world could go into any poor area and find criminal activity, but is not effective policing just look at America's drug 'strategy' - 'war on drugs', it just doesn't work. Although I do take your point that doing it on national television will more than likely force the police to act
