Another work of fiction from the Channel 4. These producers are scum bags, they hassle vulnerable people until they give in to take part in a documentary, usually with an agenda. No doubt there are some scum bags on the show but C4 are just as low providing entertainment at the expense of somebody's vulnerability.

I saw some positives in the programme. I thought white Dee seemed pretty tough but a real caring person. The way she looked out for her neighbours was really good. The shoplifting guy who kept getting nicked and went missing in the end, he's got a bit of a story there. He said he had a lot going for him but then messed it all up. Bit of a wake up call there to show how easy downward spirals can happen. Obviously fungi is a bit of a hopeless case.

I thought the 50p guy was genuine too and he was doing his best there with his idea. Maybe playing up a lot for the cameras though.

People mention that we have 'the have nots', but we also have the 'have no intentions' who are a major problem.

Police were today looking into whether an investigation should be launched following a documentary showing life on a Midland street where almost all residents claim benefits.

James Turner Street in Winson Green, which is the focus of a Channel 4 documentary
Benefits Street was broadcast on Channel 4 last night and followed families living on James Turner Street in Winson Green, Birmingham.

Police have since been inundated with comments from viewers concerned that elements of the show showed criminal activity.

Supt Danny Long, from Birmingham Police, said: “We have been aware for some time that a production company has been filming in the James Turner Street area of Winson Green on behalf of Channel 4; however we have not been actively working with the makers of ‘Benefits Street’.

“Like many people across the country, we saw the footage broadcast on the programme for the first time last night. Throughout the programme and in the hours that have followed, we have been inundated with comments from members of the public, many of whom are concerned about elements of show which showed criminal activity.

“We are currently assessing whether the content of the programme can assist us as part of any ongoing investigations or indeed whether any new inquiries should be launched in light of the material that has been broadcast. This work is ongoing and viewers will have seen for themselves that my officers have already been actively involved with some of the individuals featured.

“The Winson Green area of Birmingham is a diverse and vibrant community and the Soho neighbourhood policing team – which covers James Turner Street - enjoys a very positive relationship with local residents and community groups.

“Neighbourhood officers work alongside the area housing associations, partner organisations and the council on a daily basis to address the concerns of residents around issues of crime and anti-social behaviour – with local people very supportive of police action to tackle community safety issues.

“Patrols are taking place by the local neighbourhood team as normal today and if anyone has any concerns whatsoever, they should not hesitate to give us a call on 101.”
