Well I assumed you meant that when we are up against the wall, having to defend for our lives - Mendy is the man. My comment was meant to disagree. Apologies if I have misunderstood you

I mean we're better off with an orthodox back four rather in games we struggle to control the midfield and since Mendy is the only orthodox left back we have then he is the man.

I would still disagree as I think he is a poor defender and Delph (despite not being perfect in that position) is a better fit for those circumstances you describe

It seems Pep agrees with me if his lineups in the 'big' games this season are anything to go by.
 
It seems to me that Ben has a lot — and I mean a lot — of margin for progression as a defender. That augurs well for the future. At the moment, well, he's still a bit too gung-ho. He'll get cannier under Pep's tutelage over the next two years. I'd still have him in most of the time over Delph, though, much as I like Fabian. I'd have Delph as an occasional replacement to give Fern a rest, in fact, as a holding midfielder.
