Benjamin Pavard

Let’s be honest there is no direct replacement for walker. City are at a level now where the players we have are at the absolute top of their game. The likes of Walker and gundo are unique, as were the likes of silva and aguero. Nobody can come in and do exactly what they do because they’re one of one and half the time players can’t even get close.

Sometimes it’s about the bigger picture and while pavard isn’t Walker. He does have his own skill set and it’s one that will hopefully improve us. Is he good enough? will he workout? nobody knows and you can’t say definitively. When you do look at his skill set though and the stats around it you so a defender who is much more comfortable in our current system. For 90% of our games we don’t need walkers pace and physicality anymore because the new system has negated a lot of our old counter attack problems. We would benefit more from better on the ball defenders in these games. Which was shown by Walker being left out and peps comments towards the end of the season. Yes we still have the 10% where you play a vini jr. or mbappe but they’re two of the words best and you can’t buy a player just for those games alone. Its down to pep and the team to figure out how we now adapt without the get out of jail free card Walker offers.

I did too. And I think Pavard would be an adequate replacement

Time will tell, I guess, but I'm not even sure if I'd consider him a direct replacement.

But then I guess that gets us into the whole conversation of whether or not we even need a direct replacement. I'm leaning towards Pavard being too similar in profile to Akanji and Stones for it to be worth it.

I remember you posting similar comments on Kalvin's thread last summer.

You don't need to act like a twat just because someone doesn't agree with you.
It's not about agreeing with me. It's about acting like Pep and Txiki don't know a good player from a shit player.

PS The verdict on Phillips is still out. He didn't perform poorly...he just didn't play. So does that mean he's not good enough or does it mean he wasn't far enough along in Pep's system for him to even be considered for meaningful time? We'll find out soon enough...

If that was our defensive lineup for a game tomorrow then I'd be more than happy with it.

But I think over the course of a season there's a lack of dynamism and versatility there if we need to switch our system and/or move to a different formation. Just seems inflexible.
Gvardiol/Gomez/Lewis/Pavard can all play up and down full back if needed, doubt they will though. Pep loves the extra body to let the front 5 try things more.
