Bercow stepping down

Bercow is already in the dustbin of history as nothing he did has had any effect on the outcome. From a Remain viewpoint you could easily reflect on the fact that by ensuring that May was boxed in and couldn’t get her deal through he opened the door for Johnson to sweep to victory with a commitment to have a very hands off relationship with the EU. May wanted a very close alignment with the EU after Brexit and Bercow was instrumental in ensuring that it won’t end up like that.

Unintended consequences and all that :)
Good point. That aside to me he is he is right up there in the list of self serving self righteous politicians. Good riddance. As regards a peerage, no one should get one. The whole House of Lords is totally unjustifiable and should be abolished immediately.

May not have had an effect on the outcome but did remind parliament that rules and conventions are in place to protect the unwritten Constitution and sovereignty of parliament.
And in effect acted as leader of the opposition when the official one was incapable of leading anything.

The conduct of both May and Johnson has been reprehensible. May attempted to do brexit via royal prerogative - that would have been a deal with zero oversight and who knows where that would have gone. That was challanged in court and they ruled the HoC was required to agree to anything.

Bercow just held May and Johnson to the rules that they continued to try to break and did break as this went through. Johnson lying to the queen in the process. Brexit has been a procedural mess from start to finish. The referendum was shambolic and everything about it all the way through has been a Tory driven shit show. The fact the nation voted for such a bunch of lying grifters in the midst of this is nothing that Bercow had any influence on. The people get the government they deserve. Happy brexit day everyone.

Agree - he acted in the interest of the house as is his duty. If the government at the time were in a position to win votes then it would have been seen as standard practice. Its only because he allowed votes to take place that the government couldn't win that the brexit nutters got up set.

Couple of points

1. No matter what he may have done positively previously, he will mainly be remembered for being unable to act with independence and therefore integrity with regard to the major event of our time.

Accordingly he is a self-serving **** and should forfeit any traditional honours that normally go to an ex speaker - previous ones will have done their role with integrity

2. As a Leave supporter I have him right up there with Miller and Corbyn as deserving of thanks for creating the opportunity for a genuine Brexit to develop

For he's a jolly good fellow.....

Yup, but it won't be.

the more our pet thatcherites whinge and whine about him , the greater his legend becomes. Petty, spiteful sneering ... brexiters to a tee. At least he is not world-famous for being a serious and persistent liar, a puppet of murdoch and trump and links to putin, but as long as johnson sticks to far-right party lines he is bullet-proof as a 'hero',
who defeated the EU single-handed (TM dailyfail) ffs....

You do realise Bercow is/was a Thatcherite?

In fact he was once in a Tory splinter group who thought she was too liberal.
