I was not criticising you at all. I have some knowledge of the Culture of Spaniards, having a home there for 20 years and trying to experience and understand cultural difference. It is different to Britain for a myriad of reasons and i refuse to judge that difference. I just thought it important to point out that this is a cross cultural complex issue.

Sure. A lot of people on this thread might think differently.

Like I said above, it's a decent paper. It blends the colonial history with a broader discussion around Spanish culture a and trends while leaving space for understanding why some people wouldn't like the mascot. The discussion would be a lot better others read it, thought about it, and read Stuart Hall while they're at it.

The "Evolution of Conguitos" paper taking an academic approach is enlightening. People do not want the issue to be complicated though, "kick it out" want their view to be definitive. The "easily offended" want just that, to be easily offended. Intent to be racist, is no longer the crux of the the argument, rather the casual onlooker being offended is the prime mover, and merely by reference to centuries of racism do they justify their perspective.

True but that's what it is now. we have to accept it and move on. I think the Bernardo should just come out and apologize saying he didn't think about it while posting and move on.

Just who should he apologise to exactly Mendy wasn't upset by it so that rules him out and I'm not too sure anybody else is entitled to one.

Thanks, so they've cleaned up their image since then and made the character more PC? Which is the version Bernardo will have seen.

Still, that's not good viewing that advert, I don't think Bernardo will have likened his mate to a spear wielding tribesman. I suppose it's like the Robertson's jam mascots, which were just deemed a no go. I always wondered if they would have been seen as racist at all, if not for that awful name. I never used to see them as racist as a kid anyway because the phrase meant nothing to me.

The topic or issue isn't the point; it's the principle. It's very dangerous when people are told how/what to think and that those pronouncing judgement believe they hold the moral high ground.
