Bert Trautmann Trophy

The attendance was disappointing, but it was a first class afternoon. Above all, well done to Saints for all the effort put in and for a superb match programme which every City fan over 40 should own. If you haven't got one, get one (via the St Helens' website)! Also, well done City for all their co-operation(once again, Danny Wilson came up trumps)

In the programme, it is suggested that Bert will come over for the Coms Derby in April and that may well be the last time (at 86 years old) he does anything official at City due to health issues. That will surely be the time to name the South Stand, 'The Bert Trautmann Stand' and then why not acknowlege our other great goalkeeping legend by naming the opposite stand. 'The Frank Swift Stand' with the sub-text 'Died Munich 1958'. That would be a wonderful gesture that Bert would undoubtedly applaud, but also, only a moron would then come out with 'Munich songs and references, if that was staring them in the face...just a thought!

Once again, well done St Helens Town for such an enjoyable afternoon!

P.S. Also well done to John Gwynne for top-notch humourous MC-ing!

And another hear hear. Well said.

Apologies to Town fan, pathetic turn out from City fans.Good luck to St Helens F C.

No need to apologise BlueT - both City and St Helens did all we could to promote the game and, of course, you can't force people to turn up. Had it been a windy and rainy day I maybe could have used this as a valid reason but we had a really dry, sunny day (albeit a bit cold) or had we been charging silly prices - £4 and £2 wasn't much to ask was it?

To be honest I was really gutted at the turn-out, especially knowing the effort that went into the game's organisation and when I think that a fair proportion of the crowd were 'Town' (family, friends, supporters). I am equally disappointed for the likes of the Trautmann Foundation (Bert's charity) and the Sierra Leone project (MCCSA) who won't benefit to the extent we'd hoped for!

Cheers

John

I have to confess John, I'm a City season ticket holder and, as previously stated, I used to follow Town too whenever possible but I didn't go mainly for reasons that I didn't fancy telling the other half that I was yet again off on a jaunt but to watch a friendly between a load of old fatties and a local non-league football team she has probably never heard of despite the fact we are both St. Helens RLFC season ticket holders also. :-)

Just one query really. This was never really a game that would have appealed to many City supporters as St. Helens Town means little to them. Would it not have been much more of a success had the game been played at Knowsley Road, advertised against a Manchester City XI? It just seemed a very strange choice of venue and, if you'd have asked me to project an attendance figure before, this 3 or 400 would always have been my answer.

Anyway, I hope you didn't get Dirty Barry Kilshaw to print the programme or that'll be another massive hole in the profits gone! ;)

How much was raised in total, John, if you don't mind me asking?

Absolutely no problems in asking . . . but no final details are available at present - I need to get confirmation of tickets sales via City plus final costs/invoices regarding ground hire, catering, St John's, etc. Thankfully the money from sponsors and programme advertisers will cover a lot of the matchday costs involved and City have been generous by absorbing a significant proportion of these costs. I will ensure the details of the monies raised are published on here (and elsewhere) when the paperwork in complete.

Cheers

I was so disapointed with that pathetic turn out. It was a nice day, City not playing, and a good cause. The people that did turn up were nice people and had a good time. The match programme was excellent, and John Gwen I think he is called, was very amusing with that dodgy mike. I thought a lot more people would of supported this match. Strange so few turned up, I thought a couple of thousand would of been there, never mind. Well done to all those who organised it and those who helped out. Best of luck to St Helens FC.

To be honest our original plan was to play the game a Knowsley Road but as you may be aware our arrangements with our hosts St Helens RLFC, while much better recently, have been somewhat strained over recent years. The Former Players’ team had indicated that they would only be available on a Sunday and because the game was planned to take place during the football season it would have been difficult to arrange any other day of the week – Sunday was a complete no-go at Knowsley Road because of the likely costs involved. I suppose any venue other than St Helens home ground could be seen as strange but the choice I felt was a good one, in the main because of its location at SportsCity.

I agree (with hindsight) that had the game been in St Helens we might have reached a similar crowd figure to that of yesterday. Unfortunately, I presumed the game would be less about City Former Players v St Helens Town and more a celebration of the anniversary of Bert’s transfer and subsequent success at City. I did see a post elsewhere that referred to issues of Bert’s popularity being a ‘generational thing’ and maybe this had an impact on the wider interest in the fixture. I think Dave Wallace’s King of the Kippax ‘editorial’ – issue 173 spoke volumes when he wrote about the lad in the store (adorned by a City tattoo) who was asked to print ‘Trautmann’ on the back of a goalkeeper shirt and he asked the customer if it was his surname!!

Not sure of the reference to ‘Dirty Barry Kilshaw’ but he certainly didn’t print the programmes – we had the programmes printed as part of a sponsorship deal and even if I do say so myself the final product was excellent.

As Saint’s Season Ticket holders don’t forget you get free admission to Town home league fixtures – we’d be happy to see you!

John

Manchester City donated a signed-shirt (current squad) at yesterday's game and I am looking to raise as much money as possible from it via a raffle, auction, etc.

Anyone any thoughts, ideas, suggestions . . . .

Who won the raffle?

It wasn't claimed - the ticket number (485) was announced a few times following the half time draw by Steve Fleet - along with details of where to collect, etc. Club officials stayed around until around 4.45pm but no-one came! I spoke with City this morning (well emailed!) and explained the situation and asked if it would be possible to raise a few quid more.
