Best and worst away day you’ve been on

Best United semi. Worst hearing that we had lost to Fenerbace in Turkey after Big Mal had said we would "Terrify Europe".

Best day away was Newcastle to win the league in 68, my mates VW Beetle was rocking from side to side coming back down the A1, worst day away was Stoke, all the Stoke inbreds were throwing glass bottles in to the rafters and the glass was raining down on us.
My uncles reliant robin was turned on its roof when we eventually got back to it after the Stoke game.

Half the recollections on these threads are bollocks, but this one win a prize for being he most incorrect, the 9 goal swing, 4 years out, we played at home, wrong team.
thanks for the update mastermind if you read the thread i admitted the gaffe..get a life.

Best - undoubtedly United Semi at Wembley.
worst two both v Wigan. One the obvious choice. The other getting piss wet through on that muddy (and slippy) bank at Springfield Park watching some of the worst football anyone could ever serve up. We looked world class v Porto compared to that day in the early eighties. Can’t remember why we played em, can’t remember the result, but I definitely wasn’t feeling it that day, and I’ve always hated Wigan and anything about the place since.

cup game what a nightmare travelled up with the leicester branch .\Then when arrived
back there a 10 mile walk back home in the pouring rain.Despite being stopped by the old bill twice in the early hours they wouldnt give me a lift oh but at least we won 1-0

Don't think we played Fulham in 81 remember getting a pasting in London was it selhurst park and Charlton were using their ground I'm open to being corrected we may have got battered at Fulham in 84
You're right. I thought it was about 1981 but I dug out the programme and it was 1983-84. Strangely I can remember games in the 60s more accurately but that must be just an age thing :D

Some of those bottles were full of piss. A lad next to me got hit by a light bulb on the side of his head. The Boothen End was not for the faint-hearted!
Agree about Newcastle in 1968. You never forget your first League win! Tottenham the week before was also special.

Best.

Dicking Forest 3-0 I think David White scored a hat trick? Being a kid living in notts at the time it was most sastifying.

Worst

Losing 1-0 to Forest with that Crosby goal. Ditto being a kid.
Iwas there I went on the special everyone flinging coins. We were shite.

bristleneck I thought that the Bradford fire disaster was when we played Charlton Athletic at home when we won 5-1.

Best at home was when we beat QPR to win the Premier League for the first time. Worst losing to Wigan in the FA cup final. I don't know why but I was not convinced that we would win that day.

Excluding performances or magnitude of the games, just match day experience

Best: Fulham away Pellegrinis first season, early train down, great boozers on way from Euston to Craven Cottage, great away end right on the thames

Worst: Wolves away under Mancini, nothing round the ground, stuck at side of the pitch, crap atmosphere

Best: Burnley away 1969. The only time me and my Dad went to an away match together and, God bless him, he probably spent half his weeks wages on that trip for me. Finglands coach 25/- each, posh seats 12/6 each, programme, food etc.
Worst: 8-1 at Middlesbrough wasn't great, bloody freezing, but Celtic away was shite. Ticket collection fiasco, absolutely soaked to the skin, still wet the following day coming home, dickhead Celtic fans and a disappointing draw

Best was league Cup final in 1976 partying with the geordies all night.

Worst was Halifax in fa cup closely followed by 5-0 defeat at the swamp.

Blackburn promotion was a great day out capped by a flattering 4-1 win to seal back to back promotions. Used to enjoy pub crawl from Darwen station to Ewood, would imagine a few of those pubs are sadly no more.
Not so much for the match, which we lost but Hamburg away friendly with Keegan in 2002(?) was a great trip. Big turnout of blues for a european away outside of Wales.
Worst days, Cardiff in cup in 94 was a bad day all round.

League Cup Final v Wolves 1974 without a doubt. City played well enough, their rookie keeper (Pierce?) played out of his skin, we lost 2-1 and I cursed Rodney Marsh for missing a sitter - he was teed up and I expected him to smash the ball in, but for some reason he side-footed it weakly and the keeper had no trouble saving.
On the way home up the motorway, all the City & Wolves supporters were going the same way and traffic ground to a halt. I looked in my rear-view mirror and could see this car coming up behind me and showing no signs of slowing down. and then.....CRUNCH.......
Me & him got out in the middle lane to study the damage. He was an old dodderer, shouldn't have been let out on his own. I couldn't manoeuvre on to the hard shoulder, as there was solid traffic on the inside lane.
At least his insurance paid, but what with all the inconvenience of repairs and a crap result, I was heartily sickened.

I went to that one alone as I was living in Hounslow at the time. Away end was loud and there was a bizarre Kompany OG. Ran out comfortable winners in the end. I saw a bloke doing yoga in his underpants in that park by the river on the way to the match. I also bumped into the Chicken Hut lads who were so pissed that they thought i'd been on the coach down with them.
