Best City Goalkeeper?

I've always thought we have been quite lucky with goalkeepers. From what I hear, Margotson was the only real shocker. Kasper Schmeichel was by no means bad. In recent times we have relied on James, Isaksson, Given, Weaver and Schmeichel Snr (past his best but still better than most). We've also had very good back ups (Nash, Arason). We have a much better keeper record than them lot across town.

Wish I could agree with you but Schmeichel and Van Der Saar would be right up there in all fairness.

Also Raimond Van Der Gouw was a great back up for many years at United

I don't think you can compare Hart with Corrigan without recognising that Big Joe was a poor keeper for the much of the first half of his career. Comparing their early careers, at the same age, then Hart wins by a mile. He's perhaps not yet as good as Corrigan was by the end of his career but its too soon to say that he will not be.

I never saw either Swift or Trautmann, but certainly most of the people that I knew that did see them both play reckoned that Swift was the better.

Big Joe was the best i have seen and thats in the day before they have the gloves etc they have today.

But as said in the Trautmann thread, my grandad who was a keeper himself rated Bert as the best and he saw Big Swifty too.

So i would rate as so

1/ Bert
2/ Big Swifty
3/ Big Joe
4/ TC
5/ Scmeichal spits*
6/ Joe Hart
7/ Weaver (he should have been so much better)
8/ Barry Siddall ( for the chants at anfield when he made his debut)

Coton at the top of his game was the best I've seen, I caught the tail-end of big Joe and I still think Coton was better, really could never workout why he never played for England(think he had 1 B cap).

I used to live near a bloke who grew up in south London.

He told me he went to watch Charlton on week and Millwall the next and he said he once saw Big Frank catch the ball one-handed at full stretch with the ball flying towards the top right-hand corner of the net.

He reckoned Swifty just shaded from Bert and judging by the split of comments on here, there wasn't a fag paper between them.

Of the 'keepers I have seen for City, Big Joe is probably still the best, but TC and Harty aren't far behind.

Nicky Weaver, Schmeichel Snr and David James get honourable mentions.

Weaver made the best save I have ever seen by a City goalie; against Ipswich 1999/2000 season, though Joe Hart has pulled off some great ones since he came into the team. Schmeichel's performance in the last Maine Road derby and at Klanfield that season were superb and James gave the defence confidence after Seaman's shocking time with us. I still don't know what KK was thinking.
