Best City Goalkeeper?

Trautmann. Used to catch the ball one handed. From everything. Penalties, corners, back headers from Dave Ewing. One handed.

I think you've got Dave Ewing on the brain..........:-)

Ken Mulhearn....might not have been the best keeper, but certainly had the neatest haircut.

I used to live near a bloke who grew up in south London.

He told me he went to watch Charlton on week and Millwall the next and he said he once saw Big Frank catch the ball one-handed at full stretch with the ball flying towards the top right-hand corner of the net.

He reckoned Swifty just shaded from Bert and judging by the split of comments on here, there wasn't a fag paper between them.

Of the 'keepers I have seen for City, Big Joe is probably still the best, but TC and Harty aren't far behind.

Nicky Weaver, Schmeichel Snr and David James get honourable mentions.

Weaver made the best save I have ever seen by a City goalie; against Ipswich 1999/2000 season, though Joe Hart has pulled off some great ones since he came into the team. Schmeichel's performance in the last Maine Road derby and at Klanfield that season were superb and James gave the defence confidence after Seaman's shocking time with us. I still don't know what KK was thinking.
I remember my first City game as a 9 year old in the North Stand right behind Big Joe Corrigan and being in awe of the guy. I have seen quite a few really good City keepers since then (and some poor ones) but Joe Hart is getting there. What really strikes me though is that none of them (including big Joe) are as appreciated during their time with us outside of City as Hart now is. This is probably due to the lack of England competition.

Tony Coton all day long, how he never got a England cap is beyond me. I remember the general sense of bafflement and disbelief when watching some of his saves and then remembering that Taylor wasn't picking him!

Trautmann was a better keeper than Hart. Never saw Frank Swift play, but by all accounts he was the dogs bollocks. Tony Coton was a more than useful stopper as well. And ofcourse Big Joe Corrigan, who had he played in another era would have racked up many more England caps.

I worshiped Joe Corrigan as a kid (wide eyed myopic 10 year old, argued he was better than Clemence), but Joe Hart already is a much better keeper. Corrigan was distinctly average by comparison, and was lucky to play behind an outstanding defence in the double year of 1970. Because quite frankly he was a larder, he got better, and this may be heresy, but he was never outstanding. great Servant and still a legend.

But in his day he was behind the following in ability

Jennings, Banks, Shilton, Clemence, Parkes, Bonetti, Sprake, Stepney Harvey, Wilson, to name a few.But ALWAYS better than Rimmer.

However, Clemence, Shilton, Sprake, Wilson and Harvey all won 1st Division Championship medals
and Hart will probably eclipse all of them.

Hart ranks in my estimation only behind Banks and Jennings, as the best I have seen in British Football. On a par already with Shilton and Seaman, and they didn't peak until they were in their Thirties, it's frightening how good Hart is going to be in the future.

He had an outstanding Euro's, he is the best in the Prem, bear in mind we don't have any British keepers to compare him to, but we do have Cech and Reina in the Prem who rank amongst some of the best in the World. If you look at the Who's Who of Goalies presently playing in the Prem he is head and shoulders above everyone else, can't think of a team in Europe where he wouldn't be NO 1.

Never saw Trautmann, Swift and can't say I remember Mulhearn but vaguely remember Dowd.

Best City Goalkeepers

Hart

Schmeichel

Coton

Corrigan

Best England Goalkeepers

Banks

Hart

Shilton

Best British

Jennings

Banks

Hart

He's that fucking good

Swift and Trautmann are City legends ....

so it's more than possible that one of them would win the accolade.

Alex Stepney, better keeper than Corrigan? Controversial. In that list I'd say only Shilton and Banks were better than Corrigan, all opinions of course..

Know here you're coming from, but Stepney remember won the European Cup for United. Didn't just play in the 68 Euro Final, but WON it with that save from Eusebio, as I said earlier I worshiped Corrigan as a kid, but all the others achieved a lot more.

Corrigan played behind Book Pardoe Doyle Booth Watson Donachie and Oakes, these were really good defenders, to stand comparison with any of the other defences of the time. We never got near the League with him, he weren't that brilliant in 72 was he?

No the others were better. But would never have admitted it at the time lol

Better save than Arason double save at White Hart Lane?
