For 5 years Wellar was (in my opinion) the best song writer around. After the Jam he lost something as he's been shit since.
I think he's been better and released a couple of great albums in Wild Wood and Stanley Road.

Never really considered The Jam as a punk band as they are clearly mods and have borrowed heavily off Small Faces.

More Ramones!!!

Pretty much everything off the Ramones album and the early/late albums bar Acid Eaters.... middle stuff get's a bit poppy (well poppy for the time, still beats the shit out of todays pop)

Their image was mod, their music was, well, fucking genius. Few bands haven't been influenced by someone, and they "borrowed" off of more than the small faces. Wellar states quite openly when asked who influenced his music

I'd have The Jam down as new wave. This is punk to me:

Bob, you're always willing to learn. Try having a look at some Small Faces ;)

The term 'New Wave' has to be understood within the context of the time.
The Jam weren't punk but they were definitely 'New Wave.'
