Best Foreign Films?

IMHO the best shouts yet are oldboy and city of god.

I watch foreign films all the time and the ones I ENJOYED the most are:

1: battle royale
2: city of god
3: the chaser
4: das boot
5: let the right one in

Das boot, I think, was voted best warfilm, or close to it. Definately one of the best.

Seven Samurai

Seven Samurai...the inspiration for the Magnificent Seven

Seven Samurai is a 1954 Japanese adventure drama film co-written, edited, and directed by Akira Kurosawa. The film takes place in 1587 during the Warring States Period of Japan. It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven masterless samurai to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops.

Seven Samurai is described as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, and is one of a select few Japanese films to become widely known in the West for an extended period of time. It is the subject of both popular and critical acclaim; it was voted onto Sight & Sound's list of the ten greatest films of all time in 1982, and to the directors' top ten films in the 1992 and 2002 polls

Old Boy
The Millennium Trilogy
Old Boy: best film ever*. By about 2 miles. The fight scene in the corridor is a work of art by itself. The other two films in the vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Lady Vengeance) are good also, I didn't enjoy the third at all, but the cinematography is still lush.

TMT is OK, nothing special, the first one is probably the best of the bunch as it's a bit raw but the trilogy works very well as a set. Mrs bm loves them although them being Swedish might've helped her opinion. I can't wait for the Hollywood versions as I'd love to see how they try to replicate some of the more... shall we say challenging scenes.

Irreversible is worth a watch if you feel like putting your shit life into perspective.

* Well, apart from Hard Target, but that's not foreign, and it's not even particularly good, I just fucking love it for some reason, it really tickles my fancy. "Take your pick-stick and your boyfriend and go find a bus to catch" "I come here again... I cut me a steak" "<BANG> <clatter of shot on the bonnet and brains on the windscreen> hoo hoo hoo hoo"

Another +1 from me for Das Boot (get the 3 hour Director's Cut version - was serialised for TV - the short version is shite) and Run Lola Run is superb.

Time of the Gypsies.

About a young gypsy lad in Yugoslavia growing up and torn between the old traditions and becoming involved with the trafficking of organsied beggars and prostitution over to Italy, can be a hard subject at times, but gives a really good insight into the Romany culture and is beautifully shot.
