Best goal ever seen......

Yes, good shout. I think I was on the Kippax for that. Is that the one where he knows that Jennings is going to use his feet to block (it was Jennings' trade mark) and he just dummies, lures him into doing it and then dinks the ball over him?

The footage is below and we won 5-0 that day. Barnes's goal was at the North Stand end, the third of the five. Tommy Booth scored the first with a header from a corner at the Platt Lane end in the first half. Tueart, Barnes, Hartford and Kidd scored at the other end in the second period.

El Mago's against Blackpool all those years ago, that's still one of the best City goals I've seen. A couple of beautiful touches and then a finish made to look easy.

I am sure it was north stand
I was in block t from memory

North Stand

Well you could knock me down with a feather, I could have sworn my head was turned to the left watching that goal, not the right. Just shows what tricks your memory plays on you. It's all the weirder in that I always used to stand distinctly closer to the North Stand than to the Platt Lane end.
I wonder if I'm not conflating two different goals by Peter Barnes. Because I also distinctly remember one where he broke from close to the halfway line, and just used that phenomenal acceleration he had in the early days to beat two or three players before slotting it home. And that one, I'm pretty sure he scored at the Platt Lane end.

I see that Spurs went down that year. Bottom of the table. Satisfying to have played a part in that…

The 5-0 win more or less sealed their fate, in fact. IIRC, they had a mathematical chance after that but needed to win their one remaining game, needed results from two or other three teams to go their way, and had a significant goal difference deficit to make up.

I was at that game with my uncle rather than with my old man, who must have been working. I was therefore in the Main Stand and not the North Stand that day. I recall that some Spurs fan asked us for directions to the buses back into town and he walked to Lloyd Street South with us, then sat with us on the journey in.

I remember my uncle saying to the guy that it was a shame to see a club like Spurs going down into the Second Division. "Why?" I thought. "They're shite. Best place for them!"
