Best player from our doldrums years (1980 to roughly 2009)

Tommy Caton, Clive Wilson - reckon he would have been great under pep, very cultured footballer. Anelka was levels above any other striker we had in that period. Peter Beagrie and Paul Walsh were great technical players. Dunne and Distin were quality centre backs. Mick McCarthy was solid if unspectacular. Ian Bishop was great, and who didn't enjoy a David Phillips trademark thunderbastard.

It so sad looking back over all those weirdly enjoyable, masochisic years, and realising just how many straws we had to grasp at. There were a few gems in there, but, fuckin' 'ell! How we paid the price for what we've had in the last 15 years.

I imagine loads have said him already but I surprised a few people back before the takeover when they’d ask me who the best player I’d ever seen at City was, and I’d say Anelka.

Never particularly prolific but just looked so elegant and that everything was so effortless to him.

Also maybe surprising that although he didn’t seem to be around for long, he played more games for City than anybody bar Chelsea.

I would say the majority of those years are not doldrum but normal for the majority of football clubs.

We can single out the 82-89 and the late 90s where we yo-yo'd but in the main as madness once sang

Oh, what fun we had
But at the time it seemed so bad
Trying different ways
To make a difference to day

I have some of my best memories in that time.

Anyway Lake is my answer
