Best player from our doldrums years (1980 to roughly 2009)

Favourite player was always SWP.

Ian Wright backed up the account that he cried all the way to Chelsea and only left to save the club when chatting to Johnny Marr on the Overlap.

But shout outs to Anelka, Stephen Ireland, Richard Dunne, Elano and Petrov.

Zabba and Kompany were signed in 08 weren't they, if one season counts.

Corrigan
Ranson Dunne McCarthy McDonald
SWP Bernarbia Hartford Berkovic Lake
Francis
All in all, that's pretty much the team I would pick too.
I was going to suggest Donachie ahead of McDonald but Wikipedia says Willoe moved on in 1980.
Distin ahead of Big Mick McCarthy for me, maybe. Also I 'd be tempted to drop Bernarbia (who was past his best in his one Premier League year) to make room for Anelka.
Honourable mentions for Gerry Gow and Tommy Hutchinson too.

Definitely. I was gutted when he left to go to Portsmouth who that time were seen as a better prospect than us. Oh how the tables turned.
Was Pompey not the actual excuse used for FFP so they could go after us and other clubs gate crashing the cartel.

They offered crazy wages to James, Distin etc

If think it was more to do with the owner of pompey basically pulling their pants down . They have never recovered after that owner. I think he was also looking at investing in city around that time. But for the grace of god.

They complemented each other really well

A great example of the phrase ‘more than the sum of its parts’.

I always thought Keith Curle and Colin Hendry would have made a superb partnership. Hendry competing for the first ball, jumping into headers, bullying centre forwards while Curle used his pace to sweep up behind any flick ons. Alas Peter Reid had other ideas.

We had loads of good players. Distin, Lakey, Paul Stewart, Anelka, Flitcroft, Curly Wurly, Dunney, David White, The Goat, Coton, Quinninho, Uwe, SWP, Benarbia, Petrov, all top class. I don't know about the 'best', but the morale sapping disappointment of getting to Maine Road on a match day and finding out that Kinkladze was out injured though, was unlike that for any other player, past or present. He may have been a dilettante compared to someone like David Silva, but (partly) because he was surrounded by absolute dross most of the time, he invariably shone like the brightest star in Christendom

How could I have forgotten Andy Morrison?! The man who dragged us up out of the abyss just as we were about to disappear forever.....
