Best War Movie

If a film about the Iranian revolution fits the brief, then I enjoyed the animated movie Persepolis, though it has a very different feel to a traditional war movie.

Reading through this thread, I am struck by the fact that there are several war films that are just great films, irrespective of the subject.
One such has not been mentioned:
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
An American film based on the 1928 novel by the German writer Erich Remarque.
Highly rated by critics and audiences alike, the film contrasts the
gung-ho, go for glory attitudes in Germany with the reality of the horror of WW1.
Das Boot was originally a German tv series which was later converted to a film. Tv version better imo, as it better captures the claustrophobic atmosphere on the sub. Film still good, tho'
Finally, as befits a football site,The Great Escape. Some entertaining nonsense, Steve McQueen on his bike, but we should remember it is based on a disgraceful act of murder of PoWs.

Surely on a football site Escape to Victory merits a mention - no wait it had Stallone in it so maybe not
