My Grandad used to stick his toothbrush up the chimney and brush his Newtons with soot.

I remember being at my Grandads and he did that once when he ran out of toothpaste - seem to remember it was soot and salt

They are veneers

They aren't veneers they are crowns. They tell everyone they are veneers but it isn't true. Insane really filing your teeth down to whack some crowns on.

Veneers don't need that much filing down they only go on the front.

I've heard you can use charcoal but I think your grandad was just being, shall we say, careful, using soot. And in those days the chimney must have thick with tar, resin and pidgeon shit.
