Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

An enjoyable playlist, thanks @mancity2012_eamo

"Sunlight" - The 4 Of Us

I like the gentle strumming on this, it's a nice folk-pop song

"Hey Venus" - That Petrol Emotion

A bit formulaic if I'm being honest, but it was an OK listen.

"Knots" - Lisa Hannigan

Best song on the list. As previously noted, I played the full album that this is from, Passenger, and enjoyed that too.
This is probably the best song on that album as well.

"Belong Nowhere" - The Fatima Mansions

AKA the return of Mr Shouty! To be fair, this track's OK, if a bit mechanical sounding.

"May The Road Rise" - The Walls

A nice piano-led ballad to finish with. I said to myself that this feels like an album closer and sure enough, that's where it lies in the running order of its parent album.

Try At Swim @RobMCFC
Her best album in my opinion. Particularly some of the slower ones on it. Much more mature.

To be honest, there wasn’t a great deal that pulled me in. The first track was pleasant and I liked Lisa Hannigans voice. She reminded me a little of Amy Macdonald. I may well try one of her albums.
Thanks for putting it together.

One hit wonder (if you can call it a hit) Amy Macdonald?

Reminded me more of Rachael Sermanni, whose music I similarly would really like if it wasn't for a singing style that, for reasons I can't quite put a finger on, puts me off.

Edit, you have a point Saddles, with the track chosen in the playlist mind you.

@mancity2012_eamo, might be worth you trying that one, (Rachael) actually.

Ok. It’s a bump definitely but here I am on a Friday night and amongst others Lisa keeps cropping up.

Incidentally, there is so much more going on here I’d love to share.

Did you have a go of Rachael Semanni yet?

Also, speaking of Irish bands which I know you tend to like exploring, where do you stand on the Murder Capital? I like some, some I can skip by. They have a new album coming out soon that I'm looking forward to.

I haven’t played Rachel yet. I will now you’ve reminded me.
I don’t think The Murder Capital are for me.
The little I’ve heard of them is less than melodic, let’s say, and the lead singer’s voice just start to get irritating as he shouts more and more.( @RobMCFC would love them ;-)
I will give them a try though. The new album is out on Apple Music.

This might sound daft or even unfair but I was sort of hoping, even expecting, that @mancity2012_eamo playlist would give me a real sense of place, especially with the heading of the Celts. As I say unfair, unreasonable, especially when you consider my preceding playlist mentioned a specific place, Dunedin but none of the songs would necessarily bring to mind the South Island of New Zealand. It's just that Ireland, like Scotland, has an aura, a feel that I think music can capture. We've had a lot of Scottish music on the album review thread and some of that has stirred a sort of yearning for the place. Maybe the Scottish accents and, well the guitars that sound like bagpipes have helped there. And my familiarity with Scotland...

I've never been to Ireland but it's on the list, possibly for this year. If I think of "Irish" music I think most obviously of Van Morrison but let's face it, he could read out a list of destinations from a coach company's brochure set to one of his effortlessly whimsical beauties and invoke them with something bordering on a spiritual experience. Heck, he could read out a shopping list and probably has...

The playlist then, not as something that will stir the soul and the odd Celtic gene that we must all have but a collection of five songs.

None of them hit me on first listen but familiarity begins to help.

The first song, Sunlight I like. Despite it's rather teasing and potentially misleading, mention of a Greyhound Bus. I've not checked but I suspect they don't have them in Ireland and even if they do it's not the first place you think of when one is mentioned. It was a nice track though, and that's not meant to damn with faint praise, sets it off well.

I've heard of That Petrol Emotion but not familiar with them and had no idea what they were about. Found the song OK but nothing special.

Lisa Hannigan I think is a bit of a grower. The opening of the song a couple of times my reflex has been, "I'm not going to like this" only to find myself half way through paying more attention. I'm not sure, once the week is over that I'm going to return to it but then again I might, she's got a decent voice and a bit of lazy Spotify top tracking might be in order on one of my early morning risings when I can't face the news.

I wasn't a fan of The Fatima Mansions when they were on the album thread recently. I found this song much more to my liking though, it seemed to be played "straighter", much less harsh and the better for it. Not sure it means I'll revisit them though...

The Walls song was a bit of a disappointment, sort of nice (yes, now I am damning with faint praise) but kind of forgettable, didn't really seem to go anywhere.

All in all, once I'd got past the fact that this playlist wasn't about my expectations was decent enough and it'll have at least one more listen before the next one but nothing outstanding.

Enjoyed this @mancity2012_eamo . Not that taken with The 4 of Us track but then it kicked on. Hadn't listened to That Petrol Emotion for years and ended up playing Manic Pop Thrill and Babble. Already knew and liked LH must look at some more of those YT vids. Fatima Mansion's track was sound and a bit easier to navigate than the recent album thread tracks, the English and shifty line made me smile. The Wall track was very universal, can't be many of us who haven't been able to relate to it's themes at some point in our lives. Good stuff, thanks.

Apologies made some notes, then inadvertently tore them up and binnned them along with some finished with work stuff.

Pleasant enough playlist, not much grabbed other than Fatima Mansions (who I missed on the Album review thread so may need to catch-up on at some point).

TEP was the least enjoyable.

Interesting though to hear stuff I would not normally seek out.
