Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

i Have always been interested in the relationship between music and other art forms particularly film and TV. My playlist is a little different, I hope not too commercial, and is inspired by the Greatest TV series ever made. The Sopranos.

All the music for the Sopranos was chosen by the show runner David Chase and he had a particular genius for choosing non obvious tunes to brilliantly illustrate a scene. At times the choices were so immersive that I now cannot hear certain tunes without the accompanying scene playing like a movie reel in my head. For those that don’t know the Sopranos, this hopefully will be a good varied listen covering as it does a number of different genres Including classical, rock, American songbook and blues. Listen carefully for the City references in one of the tracks - I hadn’t realised David Chase was a Blue. For those that do know the Sopranos, a coconut for anyone that identifies which episode/scene each of these songs featured in.

as I only use Amazon Music, hopefully some kind soul can put these seven songs onto a Spotify Playlist for everyone. Hope you enjoy:

1. Woke up this Morning - Alabama 3
2. It was a very good year - Frank Sinatra
3. Peter Gunn theme - The Blues Brothers
4. State Trooper - Bruce Springsteen
5. Dirty Work - Steely Dan
6. Don’t stop believin’ - Journey
7. Con te Partiro - Andrea Bocelli
My favourite bit of music from The Sopranos:

So my mafia soundtrack hardly seems to have set the heather on fire.

here is one from my reserve playlist for you to decide if it would have been even worse.

The artist is Joanna Newsom

I think because there is an element of familiarity with most of the songs its actually a bit harder. I will comment on them, particularly in the context of the Sopranos, when I get a chance. Btw - didn't the show runner David Chase specifically pick the Journey song for that scene because when he floated a number of choices the crew hated the idea and he thought it important that it got some sort of emotional reaction/episodic memory even if it wasn't necessarily a positive one.

Not sure if it's the #1 greatest scene in TV history but it's up there for consideration and I can't remember a final scene that has bested it.

I think it is the greatest and that track is a core element of what makes it great. I genuinely cannot listen to it as a stand-alone song. So much of the final scene was pure genius including that choice.

Joanna Winsome you say…

I think the engagement on this thread is a bit less generally than the album review one but there’s time yet and rest assured I’m giving your playlist due attention.

Winsome did I say? Well she’s got something about her but I don’t want to get distracted…

Overall I enjoyed this playlist, so thanks for posting @Saddleworth2.
I haven't seen The Sopranos, but once again, I applaud both the playlist and the idea behind it.
There aren't any bad songs, just genres that I don't usually enjoy.

"Woke Up This Morning" - Alabama 3

Not heard this one before, and it's got a nice groove to it. I can see why they picked it for a TV show.

"It Was A Very Good Year" - Frank Sinatra

I've written before of my general dislike for the crooners genre. Yes, they've all got "great" voices, but the music generally doesn't do anything for me. I've heard this one before; it's OK as the genre goes, and the fact that it's an isolated song, as opposed to having to sit through a whole Sinatra album works it its favour.
I don't know how it was used in the series, but it sounds like some guy should be walking along the bank of a cold river with a jacket slung over his shoulder.

"Peter Gunn Theme" - The Blues Brothers

A well known instrumental. Most of the songs from the Blues Brothers soundtrack are very good, and this is no exception.

"State Trooper" - Bruce Springsteen

One of the better tracks from Nebraska. Bruce is my favourite artist, but this is a 50/50 album for me. No doubting the quality of the songs, but the low-fi/low-tech recording doesn't always work for me. But as noted, this one is in the positive 50%, so it's a great choice.
The reason this song works for me is his different voice, and although the guitar is quieter, it's got a nice steady strum that drives the song and the yelps are great.
FWIW, the other songs on the album that work for me are: "Atlantic City", "Johnny 99", "Open All Night", "Reason to Believe". There are other songs that tell a great story, e.g. "Highway Patrolman", but I don't think Bruce's voice works stretched out over spares instrumental backing for so long - it becomes a bit monotonous.

"Dirty Work" - Steely Dan

Coming to music in the 80s, I didn't always go back and see what I'd missed in the 60s and 70s, so it was only recently that I listened to the full "Can't Buy A Thrill" album on the back of hearing "Do It Again" (which I've heard before but was never aware of who it was). This is not a bad song, opening with some nice organ, and I'm sure the title works for the TV series.

"Don't Stop Believin'" - Journey

Great anthemic song. Everybody knows this one, right? Steve Perry is an exceptional vocalist.

"Con te Partiro" - Andrea Bocelli

No surprise, but opera's not my thing either. It's a familiar "tune" and the "small does" rules applies again; a nice end to the playlist.

Down boy. She is without doubt the finest harpist in rock.
