Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 27 - Out on blue 6 - Gone Too Soon (pg 438)

Not for me but an interesting format with the Sopranos.
My Spotify best of Sopranos had a huge collection of songs from the TV series so on another day this could have suited me better than the picks below.

Woke Up This Morning" - Alabama 3.
Loved this song from their first lp but did not think this version did not improve the song.

It Was A Very Good Year" - Frank Sinatra.
Not my cup of tea.I was never going to like this song.

Peter Gunn Theme" - The Blues Brothers.
Again prefer the Duane Eddy version.

State Trooper" - Bruce Springsteen
Not a huge fan of Springsteen and this track does nothing for me.

Dirty Work" - Steely Dan.
As above.Reelin in the Years my only Steely Dan record that I like.

Don't Stop Believin'" - Journey
AOR Classic. As long as it is Journey singing this song.Great tune.

Con te Partiro" - Andrea Bocelli.
Not my cup of tea.

I’ve been busy this week and haven’t been able to listen to either this playlist or the album thread one so far.
I’ll try giving it a go at the weekend.

I say busy, but I’ve spent a few days with the wife and another couple down in Ashford Castle.
Sheer bliss.
Love the place.

So my mafia soundtrack hardly seems to have set the heather on fire.

here is one from my reserve playlist for you to decide if it would have been even worse.

The artist is Joanna Newsom

So not only have you put 7 tracks on your playlist your‘e now subjecting us to another lol
I prefer the ‘The Sopranos ‘ one, which I’m enjoying.

Love Ashford Castle , few years since I’ve been though.

Alabama 3: "Woke Up This Morning"
I really like this song and it work ssuperbly as the opening titles music. Main reason I bought the soundtrack album.

Frank Sinatra: "It Was A Very Good Year"
Love a bit of Sinatra. Pretty little number.

The Blues Brothers: "Peter Gunn Theme"
I think this is a good version but there are better ones.

Bruce Springsteen: "State Trooper"
I'm a big Bruce fan. This works rather well being sequenced after Peter Gunn.

Steely Dan: "Dirty Work"
Great band - I like everything from their original run of albums.

Journey: "Don't Stop Believin"
I saw Journey live in Las Vegas last summer and the place predictably erupted when they played this - surprisingly early in the set. This has been a playlist / mix tape staple for me since 1981. The begining of this song can still produce a moment of frisson.

Andrea Bocelli: "Con te Partiro"
OK for opera but a form of music that is very close to the bottom of my list musical genre preferences.

Well it's an eclectic list and no mistake. Hard to argue with the motivation behind it, the right music accompaniment can really enhance a film or programme. I'm not familiar with the Sopranos though so some of that connection (well, all of it I suppose) is lost. Still, all over the place it might have been but I found bits to enjoy.

Alabama 3- I've listened to these before on the back of a good review but weren't my thing. Didn't mind this song though, was upbeat and a good opener.

Frank Sinatra- not for me but he has a good voice, could be the next Robbie Williams

The Blues Brothers- a long time since I watched that film and made me want to watch it again. Decent tempo again.

Bruce Springsteen- the Bruce stuff I like I really like but I also find some of it uninspiring and this is one of those tracks

Steely Dan- almost my favourite track from my favourite Steely Dan album, a great song.

Journey- heard it before but never really listened to it, seems to be a bit of a MOR/AOR or whatever it is standard. When I'm in the right mood though is OK, wouldst nicely on a playlist with Toto's Africa and Foreigner's I Want to Know What Love is and the like. Good driving music. Although I realise for the Sopranos purposes it's the soundtrack to one of the greatest endings ever? That would elevate it a bit.

Bocelli- I'm not a lover of Opera but it does feel like the final frontier for me musically that I'll have to go to one day. I think it's a matter of some perseverance and there are bits I like in small doses, ironically when hearing as soundtrack to TV or movies. I liked this one as well.

Will I try the Sopranos again on the back of this? Hmm, not yet but wouldn't rule it out eventually. My son went through a phase of constantly asking me if I'd watched it yet. One for the future, like my serious exploration of opera.

The Sopranos is simply great TV, as good as it gets in my and lots of other people's view. It's like a cross between The Godfather and Coronation Street ;-)

Not sure whether to comment solely on the songs or their use in The Sporanos.

A3 - Quite like them and this song, think it was Benny said the original is better, would agree.

Sinatra - despite his fame I think he's underrated as a singer as he's too often written off as a crooner. He could properly swing. However, not a great fan of this song (a) because it's not one that swings (b) when I hear it I cannot help but think of the Shatner version.

Blues Brothers - great song very evocative but there are better versions.

Springsteen - I'm not a big fan and only know a bit of his stuff but I do like Nebraska and this song.

Steely Dan - shamefully I know little about them, a big hole in my musical knowledge. This and the other half dozen songs I do know always make me think I should investigate them more but never quite get round to it. Maybe this time.

Journey - hate this song with a passion unbridled. However context is everything and within the context of the scene in question it works really well so clearly I don't hate it quite as much as I claim.

Bocelli - example of a great entertainer, he's not got a great range and he's not top notch at either end of it. But what he has got is a style and a tone that connects with people. There's lots of theoretical reasons to dislike this song and performance except I don't. And his mum and dad use to have a nice shop in the town I got married in so he gets a free pass for that as well.

As for these songs it context, we could easily have an entire thread discussing the use of music in The Sopranos which like other aspects of the show is brilliant. The fact I'd have chosen at least some different tracks shows what a good idea it was for a playlist by Saddle.

Aside, though he was never a megastar, James Gandolfino is one of those actors who I really miss seeing in new roles and wish he was still around.
