Career length should be pretty important to picking a top 15 -- I can make a tremendous greatest hits album from The Doors, and maybe 3 of them from REM and all would be better than the one useful record the The Stone Roses did, who's a band who will be rated higher by the folks here than either The Doors or REM. I love the Stone Roses, but I mean . . . come on.I see...I will forget passion, soul and melody and concentrate on social commentary, career length and sobriety as my key drivers for selecting musical favorites/ ( Thats half my list gone!
I don't find much "passion" nor "soul" in the Doors, but I find them atmospheric and interesting with some great tunes -- but their schtick waned, they didn't grow, and then The Lizard King OD'd or whatever. REM I thought evolved much more musically. From Chronic Town up to Monster, they put out 11 quality pieces (including that first EP, plus the B-sides, plus the Greatest Hits) with the possible exception of Green.
As I said, I like the Doors fine -- I love Manzarek, who was a musical genius on some levels, and Krieger was good, but not Peter Buck, and Densmore was a nobody musically, not remotely close to Berry. And Mills is one of THE most underrated bassists around, even still.
